War in Afghanistan
Reason 1 September 11th
Almost eighteen years ago, September 11th 2001 was marked one of the most important days in US
history. It was post 9/11, there was no direct connection to Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. President
Bush didn’t want to risk invading Iraq because of the events that recently took place, instead he made the
argument stating that “there should be a belated reckoning with Saddam Hussein. He continued to sponsor
terrorism, had over the years invaded and attacked four of his neighbors and killed ten thousand of his own people
(Why we went to war 2013).” After 9/11 Bush declared that it was the right time to stop global terrorism he knew
the decision would save Kurdistan (a region in iraq) and allow pro american regions in the Middle East.
Reason 2 Afghanistan
Word spread quickly about the invasion of Afghanistan. The objective was to destroy the ruler of the
Taliban, any chances of “post war stability” was said to be impossible. Luckily that war only lasted eight weeks,
easily removing Taliban. But as one problem ended another opened, the pro western leader Hamid Karzai was
brought into power. He misled the U.S and administration into thinking that Iraq would be a less challenging
prospect given their defeat in 1991. If Afghanistan proved to be difficult in the beginning of the war much like the
end, the U.S would not have invaded Iraq.
Reason 3 Support?
October 2002, the houses of congress passed twenty three rights stating the removal of Saddam. Since
Thomas Friedman and George Will supported the invasion, the day before the war 70% of American people
approved it. President Bush “obtained a joint resolution of support from congress before attacking and has spent
nearly a year attempting to win the UN’s approval for Saddam's removal (Why we went to war, 2013).”
Unfortunately Bush didn’t go to congress, he never attempted to gain approval from the UN and had no public
support. Due to his little to no effort, President Bush would not have invaded iraq.
My first Blog post! It has a lot of historical information, so I hope I didn't confuse anyone. This is
important to me because it gives the readers some historical insight on the beginning of this war. As I continued
my research for this blog post it became more interesting and I learned alot about information I never knew about.
In my next Blog post I will continue to list the last three reasons on why we went to war. Moving forward with
my research in the future I want to learn more about why the war is still continuing after eighteen years. Why
hasn’t it ended? What’s the reason behind the continuation of the war?
