*Please note that assignment guidance is for reference only and should be more specific in detail to meet customised needs.
Scenario:
You work as a design engineer for a small designing company and have been asked to meet with a
potential customer. The company mass-produces coffee in factories across Vietnam. Currently the company
uses plastic straws in their products which are considered as a harmful potential to the environment and
should be soon eliminated.
They require a new solution for coffee drinkers but still retain all drinking behaviours and enhance feeling
and convenience. You and your team have 16 weeks to show the effective solution.
Task:
Part 1: Preparing a design specification
With reference to the customer brief above you should produce a design specification, using a standard
template, which meets all the customer requirements. In addition, you should present a project schedule
for the design of the product. You should consider the importance, sequence and timing of each activity
within your plan and provide illustrations of these.
To determine whether your brief is appropriate you should compare and contrast it with the supplied
industry standard specification.
To complete this part, the following elements should also be undertaken:
Research the characteristics of current drinking solution/coffee/drinking behaviour /cups/straws
Study the customers/stakeholder’s requirements, explaining how these influence the preparation of
the design brief
Explain the use of Critical Path Analysis (CPA) in managing a project
Evaluate the potential planning techniques available and justify the preferred method.
Part 2: Formulating possible technical solutions
Having completed your design specification, you have been asked to present a suggested design solution,
Part 4: Present to an audience a design solution based on the design report and evaluate the
solution/presentation
Your manager has reviewed your design report and would now like you to prepare and deliver a
presentation to a wider audience of production managers and design engineers. It is likely that the
audience may suggest changes/improvements to the given design solution and you should be prepared for
this. Your manager wants a de-brief afterwards and will expect a justification of any further potential
improvements following feedback and/or review of the presented design solution.
Your manager will also expect you to explain the possible communication strategies and presentation
methods you might have used and reflect on the effectiveness of the communication strategy chosen.
To complete this part, you should also consider/produce:
The audience identified (see above)
Opportunities for feedback/Q&A should be considered as part of the presentation
An e-mail debrief for your manager.

Product planning:
Nowadays, the situation of people with disabilities is increasing which makes it difficult for their
families. Convenience if there is a product that can help people with disabilities can serve their own
needs. Taking that opportunity, my team has discussed together to come up with ideas to create a
product that suits the needs of their that is both safe, cheap and convenient. We hope we will select
suitable products.
After that, we have a meeting to discuss, communicate, compare and contrast the advantages and
disadvantages of each issue.
Solution:
We prioritize the convenience of customers when using our products. Design a drinkable product can
reduce the number of plastic straw dispose everyday.
To determine the needs of customers. Firstly, we must survey the reality of each customer to know
what their current needs are, what they feel trouble in life, work ... Secondly, We have to examine the
market to see what is going on, then think out the needs of the customer.

Question 13: If you have a product that helps people with disabilities to drink water by themselves, how do
you feel?
a) Helpful b) Helpful but not feasible c) Unnecessary

The table above re-evaluates the most important needs that customers need. Based on that we
started the product design process.
Based on the list of needs above, we can design a list of metrics to meet the requirements
List of metrics

Sub-list sentence:
“ Get busy living or get busy dying” – Stephen King
“ Stay hungry, stay foolish” - Steve Jobs
“ It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed” – Theodore Roosevelt
“ Có công mài sắt có ngày nên kim” – Vietnamese folk verses
“ Chớ thấy sóng cả mà ngã tay chèo” – Vietnamese folk verses
Sub-list function:
Handle
Wear on head
Wear around forehead
During the discussion we chose the metric. Based on this datasheet I can identify customer
needs and narrow down the work to complete the product easier. I can classify what is
important to do and focus on it more
Base on concept mapping ,We start with the design simple shape of the project:
We design traditional glasses because most customers want to use a traditional style glass
Now, comparing the concepts together, we have the concept scoring, which will help us to
select the suitable and effective concept to develop the device, the table below shows the
scores:
Concept screening
Criteria Rate Trọng Vũ (1) Chí Nhân(2) Duy Tân(3) Hồng Tân(4)
Environment friendly 30% 0 0 -- 0
20% (+)0 0 - 0
Durability 15% 0 0 ++ +
Functionality 15% (-)0 0 - 0
Well-design 10% ++ 0 - +
Space 5% + 0 -- -
Color 5% (-)0 0 + ++
Total 100% 2(3) 0(+3) -4 3
Decision Combine 1-2 Combine 1-2 No Yes
According to the mapping, draft and the concept 2 is the reference, we can explain:
All the concept except the concept 3 is make from plastic are make from paper give them the
same value 0. Plastic is one thing in our product limited to use it give that concept value
– –.
For the cost, concept 4 have the same range size and all have a circle to wear around forehead
give it value 0. Concept 1 design to have a smaller size and also have a circle to wear around
forehead give it value +. Concept 3 design in larger size but it just use a handle, not a circle, so
the cost have value –.
Durability, concept 1 have same material and same thick layer dimension give it value 0.
Concept 4 also same material but it have more thick layer to protect the product, so it have
value +. Concept 3 is use plastic as a material is more solid than paper mean plastic have more
durability compare to paper.
Cup and circle in circle 4 is design become 4 part (cup, circle, lid and straw), they can apart
from each other, give it value 0 at functionality. Concept 1 all thing is 3 part (cup and circle
are not separate become 2 part), give it value –. Concept 3 only use handle when drink, so it
take value –.
The design of concept 1 is the most creative design give it value + +. The concept 3 is like
normal cup, value –. The concept 4 is creative in the design of cup take value +.
Concept 1 only have one color but it not light enough, value –. Concept 3 have many light
color, value +. Concept 4 have many color and these colors are mixing well, value + +.
Concept Scoring:
Criteria Rate Concept
Concept 3-2 Concept 4
Environment 30% 3 0.9 3 0.9
friendly
20% 3 0.6 3 0.6
Durability 15% 3 0.45 4 0.6

Space 5% 3 0.15 1 0.1
Color 5% 3 0.15 4 0.2
Total 100% 3 3.05
Concept 4 arre decided insstall product because it have highest point
Aim of the product: Design a product with less plastic and protect the environment.
Part 4: Present to an audience a design solution based on the design report and evaluate the
solution/presentation
Your manager has reviewed your design report and would now like you to prepare and deliver a
presentation to a wider audience of production managers and design engineers. It is likely that the audience
may suggest changes/improvements to the given design solution and you should be prepared for this. Your
manager wants a de-brief afterwards and will expect a justification of any further potential improvements
following feedback and/or review of the presented design solution.
