Cupcake’s Life

“Can you please buy me hamster or I will leave home and start living with a waddle of

penguins.” I begged my parents for the third month in a row.

My parents would reply, “No, only if you have good grades and an A in math.”

Finally after a whole of studying and hard work, my parents agreed. It was my birthday

and I bought my hamster. When my parents and I went to the pet shop I felt as if it were destiny.

When I saw him, he immediately caught my eye. He was a tiny and little white fur ball of

marshmallow fluff; when he woke up I saw his really small button nose and dark coal-black

eyes.

I asked, “What breed is it?”

The store worker replied,”A male dwarf hamster.”

I chose him and named him Cupcake. When we had all the necessities like the food and

the cage we finally left the pet shop with a brand new addition to the family.

For the first couple of weeks Cupcake looked so frightened for anybody to touch him or

even look at him. Imagine being a tiny creature and seeing a giant monster trying to touch you

and pick you up that will certainly would be very frightening. When I finally had the chance to

pet Cupcake I think he was too shocked to move. Cupcake’s eyes became fully bland and he

started to shake very violently. Then he literally froze for 10 seconds. After a couple of days he

was used to being petted and picked up. Then everything seemed fine Cupcake was lively and

was eating very well but that didn’t last long.

Then he suddenly disappeared but each time the cage door was open but strangely

nobody really was the culprit. It was an extremely difficult case but I finally figured it out. I had

asked multiple people in the house the same question but I decided to start with my mom,

I said, “Have you seen Cupcake?”

My mom replied, “No, I had not seen him.”

“Did you kidnap Cupcake?”

She then creased her eyebrows and then said, “Why do you keep asking this absurd

questions?”

I replied, “I am sincerely sorry for this disturbance of your precious time and I’ll go back

to my room maybe Cupcake is there”

After my fruitless efforts of asking everybody who inhabited the apartment nobody

admitted that they had either opened the cage, stolen Cupcake or maybe even killed him. After a

thoughtful investigation and my detective skill, I found him in the far corner of the kitchen

looking all scared and frightened. When I put him back into the cage I realised that hamsters are

very intelligent creatures. Cupcake learned how to open the cage door by himself from the inside

of the cage. Those tiny and little paws lifting the cage door looked so adorable and then he

jumped out of the cage and started to run really fast. Luckily, I caught him before he could run

far away. Because of that little jailbreaker we had to tie the door with a rope or put clips on it. No

more breaking out of the cage.

The days spent with Cupcake were really fun and exciting. Petting him, feeding him and

cleaning him were very interesting activities but my favorite thing was the hamster ball. I would

put him in the ball and he would run around the whole apartment without a chance to be lost.

Cupcake had the chance to see the Issyk-kul lake and the beach because of the hamster ball.
Cupcake also had the chance to see the roads and the grass, so I think they were very memorable

moments for him.

A few days later I noticed that somehow Cupcake was having trouble with walking. He

didn’t run on the wheel anymore and started limping when he walked. I picked him up and

inspected all of his legs I saw a very huge, red bump that was very noticeable on his right leg.

My dad and I went to the vet to see what he could do. In the animal hospital there were a

bunch of different species. Animals waited patiently for their turn which included hamsters, birds,

dogs and even a racoon. It was a long wait but is was interesting to see different kinds of

animals. Then finally it was Cupcake’s turn. The vet examined the injured leg and said, “An

external leg bone fracture.” Then the vet took a small spraying bottle and sprayed a shiny silver

liquid on the injured leg.

I asked, “When will the leg heal ?”

The vet replied,“It will heal in a couple of days.”After that he charged a lot of money for

that weird spraying device and we were finally excused.

Finally after a whole week of healing Cupcake’s leg finally seemed fine and he started to

run again. I was very pleased to see that Cupcake was able to run and jump properly without

hurting. By the way Cupcake was eating and his constant running on the wheel, I could see that

he seemed content too.

Cupcake’s life was very short. I believe he was with me for more or less eight months, but

those eight months were very meaningful for me and for Cupcake. I remember the day that he died

just as it was yesterday. There was cold weather because it was winter and there were snowflakes

clinging to the window. I was all alone in the apartment with Cupcake to keep me company. Even

though I felt warm and cozy sitting in my home, I still had a very eerie feeling on that day. I had
remembered my duty to clean the cage and that's when I noticed Cupcake wasn’t moving a muscle

since he was laying in the same position for 30 minutes. I thought maybe he had fallen asleep but

no, when I picked him up his body was limp and cold. Cupcake wasn’t breathing either like all the

air had gone out of him. He had passed. I was mortified and I could not believe this would happen so

soon. I started crying and calling my parents telling the despairing news. Then I was suddenly aware

that I was alone in the apartment and waited for my parents to show up. My dad and I went outside

and buried Cupcake in the in the freezing and frigid ground that was just as cold as Cupcake’s

deceased body. The tombstone in my mind read, “Here lies Cupcake rest in peace.”
