Gun Control Essay

One of the most well known and most hated mass shooting to date in the US
is Columbine. The Columbine shooting is nothing to take lightly in anyway. But this is
probably one of the most important shows of a highly debated topic in the US, gun
control. Most guns should not be accessible to the citizens in the US, some guns
should be banned and the others should be incredibly difficult to obtain, because
they cause harm to others, they can harm themselves when put in the wrong hands.
This is just one of the huge amount of mass shootings. While this takes place in
1999 from the year after there have only been more. Now we can reload 30 rounds
in under 1 minute compared to back then. Now not all guns should be banned but
they should remove the sale of the majority of weapons. The only weapons that
shouldn’t be banned is the semi-auto handguns, and they should make it incredibly
difficult to get that weapon.
One of the most common crimes committed by firearms is homicides and a
very well known incident is mass shootings which both happen a lot. According to
ProCon.com’s fact section on gun control there were “126 mass shootings from
2000-2014”. That includes fairs and school shootings in just a 14 year span there
was that many. Can you imagine that is an average of 9 mass shooting per year,
there are only 12 months in a year. So if there is one shooting per month that
means there are only three months where there are no shooting. In another
article from the Illinois Council against Handgun Violence it stated that there was
“737,360 crimes with a handgun from the years 1993-2001”. Those crime varies
from robbery to homicides and varying casualty rates. The majority of crime
actually happen with a firearm included so if we can eliminate that factor the
casualties would decrease in those encounters. That is an average of around 252
crimes per day for 8 years straight.
One of the saddest things that happens is suicides, where people
unfortunately give up on life and they take their own. This can happen for a
multitude of reasons whether it is PTSD or they are just diagnosed with clinical
depression. Now according to every town research there are approximately 22,000
suicides that have a firearm involved per year. That is about a casualty rate of 59
people per day. Also according to the Everytown For Gun Safety 4.6 million
children live with a firearm that is loaded and is not locked up. With that being
said, according to the same article it says that over 80% of child suicides happen
with a firearm that is owned by a family member. So if we can get rid of those
guns then it will get rid of all those unnecessary deaths. And if we don’t ban those
weapons then we can be way more strict about having those guns.
Now the other side of the argument of gun control keeps saying the same
thing about the topic. One of the most common topic is that they say that we can’t
ban the guns because it goes against the second amendment right to keep and bare
arms. But the thing about that law is it was written 200 years ago. In that time it
literally took 3 minutes to reload 1 bullet, now it takes about a minute to reload a
magazine that contains 30 rounds. The people who wrote the amendment didn’t
know how far we would go with the technology of these weapons. Another thing
that people say about guns is “well if someone gets the weapon then something
happens to make them snap and they harm someone, we can’t predict that.” But we
can, if we implement a checklist to be filled out by the doctor for check-ups. This
checklist sums up to saying whether or not the doctor thinks the patient can own a
weapon, this checklist will happen anytime something traumatic happens. This will
also be paired with a intensive background check this will hopefully help decrease
the number of casualties from guns.
With all of this being said this is why we need to ban most guns and make it
incredibaly difficult to obtain the other weapons. It should be incredible to get
these weapons because of all the crimes that have a fire arm involved. So if we can
get rid of that factor then that gets rid of a lot of deaths. The other reason that
we should get rid of the guns and make it difficult to get these weapons so we can
lower the amount of suicides. About half of the suicides happen with a firearm so
if we can get rid of that factor then it will lower the amount of suicides. In
conclusion that is why we should ban most weapons and make it incredibly difficult
to obtain the rest of the weapons.
