Integrated circuit (IC)

 A set of electronic components on a chip of semiconductor material that is normally

silicon, in which devices and their interconnections are built.
Passive component
 A component that does not require a source of energy for its operation.
 A component that cannot produce energy and cannot have power gain meaning that it
cannot amplify signals.
 Examples; resistors, capacitors, transformers, filters, cables and inductors.
Active component
 A component that require a source of energy for its operation
 A component that can produce energy and can have power gain meaning that it can
amplify signals.
 Devices with power gain are distinguishable by their ability to make oscillators, by
feeding some output signal back into the input.
 Examples; transistors, relays and diodes
Transistor
 The transistor is an example of an “active” component, a device that can amplify thus
producing an output signal with more power in it than the input signal.
 The additional power comes from an external source of power (the power supply).
