Paul: It’s not my job to pass laws, just to try and stop
people breaking laws. I want more rules against owning
weapons and to see more education programmes in
schools so children know that a life of crime is not the
way to go. Recently, a large part of my work has been
in schools talking to young teens. You have to listen
to them and encourage them to see the police as their
friend, not the enemy.
Interviewer: You’ve also worked in young people’s prisons,
haven’t you?
Paul: Yes, and I definitely don’t want younger people to
go to prison for less serious crimes like shoplifting or
spraying graffiti on walls. They should be let off with a
warning, do community service or get a fine. Everyone
should have a second chance. I think the experience
of prison is unhelpful for most young people, and it is
cheaper and better for society to keep them out of the
prison system.

I’d go for basketball. I think rugby isn’t so popular
and it might be difficult to find a team to train with.
A: I agree with you. We should talk about the other
options, though. Hang-gliding would be an amazing
thing to do, but don’t you need to run to take off and
land?
B: I think so. It probably wouldn’t be the best choice,
although why not attach your wheelchair to the hang-
glider? Then you’d just take off and land on wheels.
A: Possibly. Well, the last one is swimming. Maybe she
would enjoy doing something where you’re not in a
wheelchair.
B: Good point, but let’s decide now. I still think the
basketball option is the best.
A: Me too.
