PREFACE
Stylistics is relative^ a new social science that is involved in the study
of the nature of style and stylistics applications in terms of
foregrounding and deviation. It is the study of varieties of language
whose properties position that language in context. For example, the
language of advertising, politics, religion, individual authors, etc., or
the language of a period in time, all belong in a particular situation. In
other words, they all have ’place’.

Stylistics. also attempts to establish principles capable of explaining


the particular choices made by individuals and social groups in their
use of language, such as socialisation, the production and reception of
meaning, critical discourse analysis and literary criticism.
TKe book is designed to provide the uninitiated reader with the
background necessary for an understanding and appreciation of
definition, branches, scope, major fields of study analysis and rules of
Stylistic in an easy, popular form.

It is hoped that the work would be useful for students at the post-
graduate levels, as well as for the general reader. It should stimulate,
inspire, and encourage further study.

When we embarked on this editorial enterprise, we expected to enjoy


the interaction with many of our most distinguished colleagues that the
preparation of this book would entail, which is so much easier now in
the age of electronic correspondence. We thank all of the authors for
this wonderful opportunity and we hope that the readers, too, will
