1.0 Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:


1.1 employ a variety of reading skills to interpret and respond to general and
academic texts (C4)

1.2 demonstrate the ability to use both intensive and extensive reading
strategies(C3,A3,P5)

1.3 demonstrate the ability to speak spontaneously and


effectively in social and academic settings(C3,A3,P5)

1.4 interpret and respond to authentic listening discourse (C4)

1.5 produce grammatically correct structures when responding to reading and


listening texts and speaking (C3)

2.0 Course Description

This course is designed to equip students with the reading skills necessary to help
them improve their comprehension of written English in order to compete successfully
in an academic program and to be confident and independent readers. Specifically,
students will be exposed to intensive and extensive reading strategies through a
variety of reading materials to build higher level reading skills as well as engage in
voluntary reading at their own initiative. In addition speaking and listening skills are
integrated into the course to help students perform effectively and competently in the
social and academic contexts. This course aims to raise their proficiency to high
intermediate level by exploiting a variety of materials in varied situations. Appropriate
consideration is given to the development of higher-level grammatical construction,
vocabulary expansion and extensive reading activities which are intended to increase
students’ lexical density.

3.0 Course Content

The following grammar items are taught incidentally in reading, speaking and
listening: review of parts of speech, basic tenses, perfect tenses, passive forms, and
transitional words & phrases.
3.1 Reading

3.1.1. Identifying personally relevant reading goals(C1,A1,P1)

3.1.3. Preparing responses for reading log and reading circles(C3,A4)
3.1.4. Applying general reading strategies(C3)
3.1.5. Recognizing the structure of a passage(C1,C2,C4)
3.1.6. Recognizing the mechanics used in reading texts(C1,C2,C4)
3.1.7. Paraphrasing information(C2)
3.1.8. Summarizing information(C4)
3.1.9. Analyzing and interpreting non-linear texts(C5,A4)
3.1.10. Analyzing reading texts(C4)
3.1.11. Drawing conclusions(C3)

3.2 Speaking

3.2.1. Using conversation strategies in social interactions(C3,A1)


3.2.2. Preparing and expressing ideas orally in academic and non-academic
