1 Introduction

The tourist destinations by excellence have always been cities such as Paris,
London and New York, but those days were left behind. Asian destinations have
attracted many tourists and are setting trends. So much so that Bangkok is
consolidating as one of the tourist destinations by excellence. So much so that
Bangkok is consolidating itself as one of the favorite tourist destinations. It was the
most visited city in the world in 2017, and the second most visited city in 2018,
according to the prestigious Global Destination Cities Index (GDCI) prepared by
MasterCard.

2.1 History

The history of Bangkok is very recent and dates back to the 18th century. The city
of Bangkok emerged after the capital of the kingdom of Siam was transferred to Thon
Buri, one of the regions that make up the current Bangkok. After many battles against
the Burmans, these were finally expelled in 1782, the year when King Chao Praya
Chakri was crowned as Rama I. It was he who founded then, the city of Krung Thep
Phra Maha Nakhorn translated as the “City of Angels” and which after centuries of
growth would be transformed into what is now known as Bangkok.

After his coronation, Rama I ordered the construction of the Grand Royal Palace in
Bangkok, as well as the various canals and the renovation of the temples that were
in the territory of the city. The expansion of Bangkok was generated thanks to the
absorption of the small communities that surrounded it. This expansion was greater
at the beginning of the XIX century due to the increase of foreign inhabitants, who
traveled to the country with the objective of establishing new commercial ties,
bringing with it its architecture and collaborating in the planning of new urban projects
and in the construction of western buildings, stations, among others.

In the year 1932 and due to a military coup, the kingdom of Siam was renamed
Thailand, changing its system of government to a constitutional monarchy. From the
60s to the present, Thailand has suffered from various coups and nowadays there
is a certain political instability. However, this has not stopped Bangkok from rising
as one of the largest and most important capitals of the Asian region, being one of
the main financial and tourist centers of the region.

2.2 Important characters

2.2.1 Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindhorndevarangkul

He was born on 28 July 1952, and is the King of

Thailand since 2016. He is the only son of the
late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.
In 1972, at the age of 20, he was made crown
prince by his father. After his father's death on
13 October 2016, he was expected to accede to
the throne of Thailand but asked for time to
mourn before taking the throne. Finally, He
accepted the throne on the night of 1 December
2016

2.2.2 Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya

She was born on 8 January 1987, and is a

princess of Thailand, the only daughter of
King Vajiralongkorn and his former
consort Sujarinee Vivacharawongse. She has
produced works as a fashion designer, and
competed in sports as an equestrian and former
badminton player.

LICEO LUIS GÓMEZ CATALÁN 3

2.2.3 Jiratchaya Sirimongkolnawin

She is 25 years old, is a model and was

the winner of an unconventional beauty
contest. There are beauty contests for
all tastes: from the classic Miss
Universe to those that organize
themselves to give voice to those who
have no place in traditional
competitions, such as Miss Gordita
Paraguay.

Within this second group appears Miss

International Queen, a contest that has
been held since 2004 and whose crown
won Jiratchaya in the 2017 edition. It
should be noted that this contest is a beauty contest for transsexuals and is the most
important in the world.

2.3 Fun facts

 Bangkok in Thai is called Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin

Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom
Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya
Witsanukam Prasi. The Guinness Book does not recognize it as the city with
the longest name in the world since it is a disused place name.

 Neither Bangkok nor Thailand have ever been colonized by a European

power. It is the only Southeast Asian nation that has achieved such a feat.
However, its independence was achieved in exchange for large concessions
of territory to the European powers (in the 19th century, for example,
Thailand ceded Cambodia to France).

 Bangkok is, after Tokyo, the Asian capital where there is a greater variety of
international restaurants. The most used ingredients in your kitchen are rice,
noodles, garlic and coconut milk. The "Pad Thai", one of the best known
dishes of Thai cuisine, carries all these components.

 The shield of the city shows the god Indra riding in the clouds over Erawan
(Airavata), a mythological creature in the shape of an elephant (sometimes
represented with three heads). In his hand Indra holds a lightning bolt, which
is his weapon to drive away the drought. The shield is based on a painting
made by Somdej Chaofa Kromphraya Narisra-nuwattiwong.

3 Routines

3.1 Taco Lake

It is a private lake
which serves as a
complex for extreme
water sports such as
wakeboarding, cable
skiing and
windsurfing.

3.2 Amulets market

Talismans and amulets

that are real treasures are
stacked on the tables of
vendors and specialists.
The bustle of potential
buyers who look to see
the merchandise with
tranquility and thoroughly
study each piece is
amazing.

3.3 Soi Cowboy

Another attraction of Bangkok

is the existence of different
"red zones”. In addition to
countless venues and mini-
areas dedicated to nocturnal
"leisure", there are, let's call
them, the 3 heavyweights by
excellence. Soi Cowboy,
Nana Plaza and the Pat Pong
night market. The street, on
both sides, has several strip bars where bikini waitresses serve drinks. In others
they dance at the bar while the customers drink something. Generally, when they
have finished their dance shift (they go up and down continuously) they go down to
talk with the clients to convince them to invite them to something.

This street is quite touristy and there is no danger in visiting it. Prostitution is fairly
common among Thais but this street is clearly aimed at foreign men

3.4 Chinatown
When you go discovering it you
will realize that it is like moving to
the Asian giant without leaving the
country: street food stalls, posters
written in different characters,
strange and unknown foods.

Its narrow streets hide thousands

of everyday scenes that, although
for them they are just that, everyday, they will turn out to be the most attractive to
us.

3.5 The Muay Thai

Muay Thai is part of the Thai

essence since centuries ago, and
because to get to know a culture
well there is nothing like getting as
far as possible in it.

3.6 Navigate the Chao Phraya.

The backbone of
Bangkok has its own
name and it is the river
that crosses it from
north to south. Chao
Phraya is also the main
river in the country and
a different way of
moving around the
capital to discover the
city from an original
and different point of view.

There is a whole network of boat-buses that constantly navigate through it and

thanks to which it is possible to reach many of the most tourist places easily and
quickly. The views are also great.

3.7 Lumpini Park

If the city of New York has its Central

Park, Bangkok has its equivalent in
the Lumpini Park. Green lung and
quiet heart of the city, Lumpini Park
is the ideal place to spend an
afternoon of tranquility when you
see that the chaos of Bangkok can
be with you and to know another
reality of the local people that inhabit the city. During the day the park is visited by
locals to perform all kinds of outdoor sports among which outdoor gyms stand out
for practicing bodybuilding and free Tai Chi sessions. During the afternoon the
atmosphere is much more childish, with families and children playing in every corner
of the place.

3.8 Sukhumvit Street 11

Music, drinks, street

food stands next to the
best restaurants and
old Volkswagen vans
converted into
makeshift bars where
they serve cocktails of
all types and colors.
That is the essence of
this street.

3.9 Erawan Shrine

Located on the corner between

Ratchadamri and Ploenchit
streets, next to the place where
the Erawan Hotel was built
years ago, the figure of the god
Brahma is worshiped daily by
hundreds of faithful.

3.10 Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World

At the Sea Life Ocean World (Siam

Paragon Mall), which is located in the
heart of Bangkok, you will enjoy the
unforgettable experience of swimming
with sharks. There are many species:
tiger sharks, black tip sharks, leopard
sharks, leopard sharks, eagle rays.
Adrenaline is guaranteed!

4.2 Places of interest

4.2.1 The Grand Palace

Built in 1782, The Grand

Palace, included in a larger
complex called Wat Phra
Kaew, it was the king's
dwelling for 150 years. Is
probably the biggest tourist
attraction in Bangkok. You
need at least one full
morning, and this is because if you want to photograph everything you will realize
that the spaces are huge and there are a thousand places to know inside. An
important detail is that you must be properly dressed. Being a sacred place for
them, you must respect this. No shoulders, no knees, no calves.

4.2.2 What Pho

Wat Pho, known also as

the Temple of the
Reclining Buddha, is a
Buddhist temple that is in
the Phra Nakhon District.
It is located on
Rattanakosin, directly
south of the Grand
Palace. The 46 meters
long, which measures the
largest reclining Buddha in the world, makes Wat Pho one of the most important
tourist attractions in Bangkok.

4.2.3 Wat Arun

The temple of
Wat Arun is one
of the most
visited places in
Bangkok. This
huge Khmer-style
prang measures
no less than 82
meters high and
began to rise at
the beginning of
the 19th century.

The construction
stands out, especially for its laborious decoration. For the floral mosaics pieces of
Chinese porcelain were used and they are precious.
