MONITORING REPORT
Version 1.0 and date 27/06/20011
1. Purpose of the project activity and the measures taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
The Codana Biogas Project (hereinafter CBP) is a methane avoidance project which treats the
vinasse produced by the distillery process at Codana S.A. through an anaerobic reactor. The
biogas produced by the project activity is sent to a boiler producing the necessary steam to
operate the distillery, used mainly as a heat source in distillery towers and evaporators. The
CBP reduces methane emissions that would enhance climate change by the implementation of
the project activity.
The project activity involves the installation of an anaerobic reactor, the necessary collection
pipeline and a treatment system to use the methane as a fuel in a steam boiler.
The crude vinasse produced from the distillery process enters into the homogenization and
cooling process. The vinasse enters then to an anaerobic reactor (capacity of 8,000 m3),
internally recovered with an epoxy resin containing 6,700 m3 of plastic media. The anaerobic
reactor has been installed with all the required safety valves, control valves, blowers and
transmitters of temperature, level and vinasse flowmeter to ensure proper operation in
accordance with manufacturer instructions.
The vinasse enters through the bottom entrance of the anaerobic reactor and flows through the
biomass placed in the plastic media, where the bacteria consume the biodegradable COD,
generating biogas rich in methane which is accumulated inside the dome of the reactor. The
biogas is then treated in a dryer with chiller and a condensate knockout pot to reduce the
humidity. The biogas is sent to a boiler which produces the necessary steam to operate the
distillery, used mainly as a heat source in distillery towers and evaporators. As a control
measure, an open flare and control panel has been installed to burn the excess biogas in case of
boiler failure or maintenance works.
3. Relevant dates for the project activity (e.g. construction, commissioning, continued operation
periods, etc.).
The Codana Biogas Project was commissioned on 1st August 2009 and has been operating since
then. The project activity was registered on 18th January 2010.
27,162 tCO2e
The project takes place at Codana industrial facility, in Milagro, Guayas Province, at 45 km from
Guayaquil (Ecuador), located in 79º 36’ 56” W and 02º 35’ 57”.
The crude vinasse produced as from the distillery process enters first into a cooling tower to lower the
temperature to 38-39ºC. The mixture is then sent to an equalizer tank, where the mixture is
homogenized and the pH is controlled with NaOH until pH reaches values between 7 and 8. If
necessary, additional macronutrients (such as N and P) are added to the vinasse mixture.
Once the vinasse has reached the optimum conditions, it enters to an anaerobic reactor (capacity of
8,000 m3), internally recovered with an epoxy resin containing 6,700 m3 of plastic media. The vinasse
enters through the top entrance of the reactor and flows through the biomass placed in the plastic
media, where the bacteria consume the biodegradable COD, generating biogas rich in methane which is
accumulated inside the dome of the reactor. During the operation, the treated vinasse recirculates again
into the anaerobic reactor in order to improve the contact between the substrate and the biomass placed
in the plastic media. The critical variables to operate the anaerobic reactor in optimal conditions are
pH, Total Suspended Solids, Temperature and Hydraulic Retention Time. The anaerobic reactor has
been installed with all the required safety valves, control valves, blowers and transmitters of
temperature, level and vinasse flowmeter to ensure proper operation in accordance with manufacturer
instructions. The treated vinasse leaves the reactors through the bottom exit and passes through an
aerator to reduce the odour from the remaining sulphite compounds. The resulting vinasse is then used
for farming irrigation.
The biogas produced in the anaerobic reactor accumulates in the dome and is then treated in a dryer
with chiller and a condensate knockout pot to reduce the humidity. Such measure ensures the gas to be
in dry conditions to minimize the reaction with H2S present in the biogas in order to avoid the
possibility of corrosion into the gas pipeline. The biogas is sent to a boiler which produces the
necessary steam to operate the distillery, used mainly as a heat source in distillery towers and
evaporators. As a control measure, an open flare and control panel has been installed to burn the excess
biogas in case of boiler failure or maintenance works.

The calculation of the baseline emissions are following the procedures described in the methodologies
AMS-I.C Version 13 / AMS-I.D Version 13 / AMS-III.H Version 09 and according to the PDD.
For the Vinasse Treatment following AMS III.H, the option “iv) Introduction of methane recovery and
combustion to an existing anaerobic wastewater treatment system such as anaerobic reactor, lagoon,
septic tank or an on site industrial plant” is selected as per the registered PDD. Baseline emissions (BE
hereinafter) are calculated using MEPy,ww,bl (Methane Emission Potential of wastewater treatment
plant [tCH4]) times the Global Warming Potential of Methane plus MEPy,s,treatment (Methane
Emission Potential of the sludge treatment system [tCH4]) times the Global Warming Potential of
Methane. In this case the project considers the replacement of sludge every 10 years that means
MEPy,s,treatment will be not considered for the ER calculations. The formulae used to calculate
Baseline Emissions under AMS III.H: Vinasse Treatment is:
Figure 5. Formulae used to calculate Baseline Emissions under AMS III.H: Vinasse Treatment.
For the Fossil Fuel Switch following AMS I.C, the baseline emissions are calculated as the fossil fuel
consumed by the baseline scenario using the net quantity of steam/heat supplied by the project activity
in TJ (HGy) times the CO2 emission factor per unit of energy of the fuel that would have been used in
the Baseline plant in (tCO2/TJ), obtained from reliable national data, over the efficiency of the plant
using fossil fuel that would have been used in the absence of the project activity (ηth). The formulae
used to calculate Baseline Emissions under AMS III.H: Vinasse Treatment is:
Figure 6. Formulae used to calculate Baseline Emissions under AMS I.C: Fossil fuel switch.
The sum of both Baseline Emission calculations gives the total amount emission reductions. The
following table represents the actual values used to calculate the baseline emissions with the
corresponding results:
Table 6. Results and parameters used to calculate the Baseline Emissions of the Codana Biogas Project.

BE1, AMS III.H 43,675 tCO2e Baseline Emissions due to the Vinasse Treatment
BE2, AMS I.C 7,103 tCO2e Baseline Emissions due to the Fossil Fuel Switch
BETOTAL BE1, AMS III.H + BE2, AMS I.C 50,777 tCO2e Baseline Emissions of the project activity
As shown in the table above, the Total Baseline Emissions of the Codana Biogas Project (CBP) during
the monitoring period are 50,777 tCO2e.
The calculation of the project emissions are following the procedures described in the methodologies
AMS-I.C Version 13 / AMS-I.D Version 13 / AMS-III.H Version 09 and according to the PDD.
For the Vinasse treatment, project emissions calculations (based on AMS-III.H) consist of:
CO2 emissions on account of power used by the project activity facilities: Emissions from
electricity or diesel consumption during the monitoring period (PEpower) are calculated as the
amount of electricity consumed during the monitoring period by the vinasse treatment facility
times the Emission Factor of the Ecuadorian connected grid (calculated ex-ante according with
AMS I.D).
Methane emissions on account of inefficiency of the wastewater treatment and presence of
degradable organic carbon in treated wastewater: Emissions from degradable organic carbon in
treated wastewater (PEww,treated) are calculated as the decomposition of the remaining COD after
the treatment.
Methane fugitive emissions on account of inefficiencies in capture and flare systems:
Emissions from methane release in capture and flare systems (PEfugitive) are calculated through
capture and flare inefficiencies in the anaerobic wastewater treatment. Conservative value of 50%
for open flare is used as CFE.
Methane emissions resulting from dissolved methane in the treated wastewater effluent:
Emissions from dissolved methane in treated wastewater (PEdissolved) are calculated considering
the dissolved methane content in the treated vinasse which leaves the treatment facility.
The formulae used to calculate Project Emissions under AMS III.H: Vinasse Treatment is:
Figure 7. Formulae used to calculate Project Emissions under AMS III.H: Vinasse Treatment.
For the Fossil Fuel Switch, project emissions are calculated as the remaining fossil fuel consumed by
the boilers. In order to estimate the project emissions due to fossil fuel consumption, the FFcons has
been monitored during the project activity.
The formulae used to calculate Project Emissions under AMS I.C: Fossil fuel switch is:
Figure 8. Formulae used to calculate Baseline Emissions under AMS I.C: Fossil fuel switch.
The sum of both Project Emission calculations gives the total amount emission reductions. The
following table represents the actual values used to calculate the project emissions with the
corresponding results:

PETOTAL PE AMS III.H + PEAMS I.C 23,615 tCO2e Project Emissions of the project activity
As shown in the table above, the Total Project Emissions of the Codana Biogas Project (CBP) during
the monitoring period are 23,615 tCO2e.
As per methodologies (AMS-III.H and AMS-I.C), the calculation does not need to consider leakage
emissions because the project activity does not use equipment transferred from another activity.
E.4. Emission reductions calculation / table
Since the leakage emissions are considered to be 0, the emission reductions for the monitoring period
equal the baseline emissions minus project emissions. The following table represents the total emission
reductions achieved during the monitoring period:
Table 8. Emission Reductions achieved during the monitoring period by the Codana Biogas Project.

LETOTAL LE AMS III.H + LEAMS I.C - tCO2e Total Leakage Emissions of the project activity
ERTOTAL BETOTAL - PETOTAL 27,162 tCO2e Total Emissions Reductions of the project activity
As shown in the table above, the Total Emission Reductions of the Codana Biogas Project (CBP)
during the monitoring period are 27,162 tCO2e.
The following table represents a comparison of actual values of the emission reductions achieved
during the monitoring period with the estimations in the registered CDM-PDD:
Table 9. Comparison of actual emission reductions with estimates in the CDM-PDD in the CBP
The actual emission reductions achieved during the current monitoring period (27,162 tCO2e) are
lower than the emission reductions stated in the registered CDM-PDD (30,442 tCO2e), so there is no
need to provide an explanation of the cause of any increase.
