Question3

a) The analysis of the complex formed between Cu(I) and 1,10-phenanthroline was
conducted using molecular spectroscopic method. The results showed that this
complex has a molar absorptivity () of 7000 L cm-1 mol-1 and maximum wavelength
absorption () of 435 nm. Calculate the absorbance of a 6.77 x 10-5 M solution of the
complex when measured in a 1.00cm cell at wavelength of 435nm.

b) In ultraviolet (UV-VIS) spectroscopic technique, blank correction is implemented in

order to reduce errors due to non-specific radiation losses (e.g. scattering, reflection)
and differences between sample cuvettes.

i. With the aid diagrams, deduce the calculations to determine the true
absorbance after performing blank correction.
ii. Sketch the schematic diagrams to show the implementation of blank
correction in the instrumentation arrangement of single beam UV-VIS
spectroscopy and double beam UV-VIS spectroscopy (identify all the
components). Explain the difference of blank correction procedures between
single beam UV-VIS spectroscopy and double beam UV-VIS spectroscopy.
