MODFOREST: A Decision Model Prototype

Froilan Merlo
Proyecto BOLFOR

The MODFOREST decision model aims to capture the interactions between social organizations
that live in (around) forests within the context of sustainable forest management in Bolivia. The
key components of the model are a submodel simulating how social organizations make
decisions, a forest submodel including tree species submodels, and a context submodel that
includes the law and market rules. MODFOREST uses scenarios to aid decision makers. This
prototype was developed for the Bolivian context and was developed with Simile software. The
social organizations are Indigenous Communities (Tierras Comunitarias de Origen, TCOs) and
Municipal Communities (Agrupaciones Sociales del Lugar, ASLs).
