Review of theses entitled “BUDAYA ARISAN DALAM PERSPEKTIF

BOURDIEU: STUDI KELOMPOK ARISAN PEREMPUAN KELAS
MENENGAH DI SURABAYA” by Disna Puspita Anggraeni

A) Introduction

B) Capitals

There are four types of "capital" stated by Bourdieu as a factor of social structures
including economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, and symbolic capital.
Economic capital involve money and assets; cultural capital involve knowledge,
tastes, aesthetic and cultural preferences, language, narration, manner, speech, and
so on; social capital involve relationships and networks, affiliations, family tree,
and etc; while symbolic capital refers to other three types of capital. (in
Haryatmoko, 2003, p 12, Thomson, 2010, p. 69).

1) Economic Capital
In the arisan Cantiq, economic capital amounts of IDR 500,000 and IDR
6,000,000 for once gathering. A member of the arisan Cantiq must collects
a fund of IDR 600,000 cash per year. The costume rental cost ranges from
IDR 150,000 and the make up services cost depends on the taste of each
member.
2) Social Capital
The identity of arisan Cantiq in Surabaya as a middle-class mother’s group
who often conducted gathering in classy places, streets abroad, attracts
attention with their costume, often published by celebrity media.
3) Cultural Capital
cultural capital capacity in the arisan Cantiq including the identity as a
member of arisan Cantiq which is as religious, social spirited, and
fashionable. To achieve a religious identity, arisan Cantiq conducting a
religious group called Jamilatun Nisa every Ramadhan. As generous
mothers, the arisan Cantiq’s members launch kind of social activitiy every
month and it costs of IDR 200,000 to IDR 250,000. As technology literate,
the arisan Cantiq’s members trying to reveal themselves by active on
renewing and uploading various photos to their social media like
Instagram and Path.
4) Symbolic Capital
The symbolic capital in the arisan Cantiq including various identities as
housewives who sociable, fashionable, popular, religious, and generous
gained through their status as arisan Cantiq’s member.

C) Field
Field or arena in Bourdieu perspective is a place, network, or structure
with various kind of relationships (religion, culture, economy, intellectual,
and etc) which social contact among the members, or often to be referred
as social agent, occurs within and it appears to be competitive as strategies
used to achieve promotion of social level of the individuals or at least to
maintain their position. The motive or characteristic of every arena could
be different as it also based on the surrounding or location of where it
bases on. For example, the study explains that while the arena in suburban
or rural area are still focused more on economic motive, the ones in the
urban area are shifted more towards lifestyle and social recognition though
we can still find economic motive there. For the case of the study, it
mentions that the description of both arisan Cantiq and arisan Gold are
close or more or less the same as some members of arisan Gold are also
come from arisan Cantiq and they are both base on the same urban area
which is Surabaya.

In arisan Cantiq, the performance of differentiation occurs symbolically

through the appearance or fashion of each member which denote their
position within the group. The social struggle also appears in arisan Cantiq
as it said in the study that some people, especially those that have already
been there from early are intended to get and broaden their social network
and relations which also can be useful for their business while sometend to
be social climber as they are looking for social recognition and level of
power among other members. Social status or recognition can be achieved
in many symbolic ways within the arena as the study shows that even the
charity and religious activities can help them to construct certain social
status and self-image.

On the other hand, arisan Gold is not so different with arisan Cantiq as
some of its members come from there. But, in the sense of bonding, arisan
Gold is lacking as it is still considered as new compared to other arisan
groups including arisan Cantiq. It occurs due to the motives of each
member of arisan Gold are actually tend to be more on economy such as
investation and business compared to arisan Cantiq.
