b/ Examination of Starch formation: Observe the color 2 areas after staining with Lugol

Procedure:

1. Choose one leaf on a growing tree and covered the middle part of it by a dark tape
within 2 weeks.

2. Picked the leaf and removed the cover and observed the color between 2 different
parts.

3. Boil it in water for 5 minutes and put it into the test tube with ethanol 70% and
continue boiled until the leaf’s color disappears.

4. Took out the leaf, washed and stretched on Petri dish and added Lugol into it. Then
observed the 2 parts again

Result:

Color observation

Discussion :

a/ Explain the phenomenon in lowering level of water in experiment 1 ?

The level of water in experiment 1 lowering because of the photosynthesis process of

waterweed. To be more specific, in photosynthesis process, light energy transfers

electrons from water (H2O) to carbon dioxide (CO2), to produce carbohydrates. In this

transfer, the CO2 is "reduced," and the water becomes "oxidized". Ultimately, oxygen

(O2) is produced along with carbohydrates. As a result, level of water decreased.

b/ What will happen if we get the burned match to meet the O2, CO2, H2?

- If we get the burned match to meet the O2 , it will continue to burn even stronger

because this gas maintains the fire and fire need O2 to burn

- If we get the burned match to meet the CO2, the fire will no longer burns and

extinguishes because fire can’t burn when there is only carbon dioxide around it.

- If we get the burned match to meet the H2 , it will continue to burn but with the fire has

light blue color and we can hear the sound “pop” ,because hydrogen gas is highly

inflammable gas that ignites like an explosion.

c/ Explain why the color of 2 areas ( covered and uncovered) is different?

With the covered area, the photosynthesis process still occurred so it produced and

contained starch. Therefore, after adding Lugol solution, it would react with the starch so
the color of the covered part changed to black. Meanwhile, the uncovered area’s color

did not change because there was not starch left.
