AMERICAN ENGLISH AND FILIPINO

• People's feelings and emotions, or more generally "affect," are at Ieast


partially determined by their cultural background. The concerns of a given
culture are expressed in a certain language. Difficulties arise when trying to
express these concerns in another language since the latter language was probably
not developed to express the same cultural concerns. If a technique to measure
affect can be developed for the special situation of translation between languages,
.the following may result: (a)· more precise indications of exactly what aspects
of affect can and cannot be communicated as part of translation between
languages; (b) a greater understanding of a broader area, the relationship between
culture and language. A study was designed to investigate the translation of
affect between American English and Filipino, the national language of the
Phllippines. Thirty-two raters read and then indicated their feelings about four
types of materials: humurous, violent, factual, and passages depicting positive
affect in interpersonal relationships. As depicted, humorous passages were rated
more so in English. Predictions were based on values commonly held by people

• in the two countries. Passages depicting positive interpersonal relationships were


rated more "serisitIve" in English than in Filipino, ;>ossibly because of the
availability of models in the English ·language. Passages explaining complex
factual material were preferred in English, ·possibly because that is the language
in which the material is commonly presented. Discussion.centers on application
of the results to the training of translators/intrepreters and to the study of the
