Redox Lab
Troy Williams and Kieran Davis

Pre-lab

a) For half equation C the Cl is being reduced and in half equation B the sulfur is being
reduced.

b) Cl+1 + 2e- → Cl-1 and S+6 + 2e- → S+4

c) B when balanced is SO42- + 4H+ + 2e- → H2SO3+ H2O

C when balanced is H+ + ClO- + 2e- → Cl- + OH-

Questions

Experiment 1
Conclusion: Iodine was formed
a)
2I- → I2 + 2e (this is reversed)
Fe3+ + e → Fe2+
Fe3++ 2I- → Fe2+ + I2

b)
Following the reaction the anion iodide turned to iodine so the half reaction A moved right to left.

c) F > A in terms of oxidizing strength

Experiment 2
Conclusion: Fe2+ ions were oxidized
a) If anion hypochlorite (ClO-) forms hydroxide ions (OH-) then they would form a solid
insoluble compound. This is because Iron (II) was oxidized to Iron (III) and Iron (III) is
insoluble.

b) C ClO- + H2O + e- → Cl- + OH-

F Fe3+ + e- → Fe2+
A 2I- → I2 + 2e-
C>F>A
c) H+ + ClO- + 2Fe+ → Cl- + OH- + 2Fe3+
Experiment 3
Conclusion: no reaction
a) Hypochlorite ions do not have the reduction potential to spontaneously react
b) C ClO- + H2O + e- → Cl- + OH-
F Fe3+ + e- → Fe2+
A 2I- → I2 + 2e-
E Br2 + 2e- → 2Br-
c)
