1. The amount of sulfur dioxide in air may be determined by bubbling a sample of air through
aqueous NaOH, where it reacts according to the following equation:

SO2 (g) + 2NaOH (aq) → Na2SO3 (aq) + H2O (l)

The concentration of the unreacted NaOH can be determined by titration against a standard
solution of HCl.

A sample of air was bubbled through 200 cm3 of 1.00 M aqueous NaOH. The resultant
solution was diluted to 1 dm3 with water, and 25.0 cm3 of this diluted solution was neutralised
by 20.40 cm3 of 0.100 M HCl.

(a) Calculate the total amount of unreacted NaOH in the diluted solution.

(b) Calculate the number of moles of SO2 in the sample of air.

2. 4.30 g of an impure sample of ammonium chloride was warmed with 100.0 cm3 of
1.00 mol dm−3 of sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture was boiled until all the ammonia
was driven off. The excess sodium hydroxide in the mixture required 50.0 cm3 of
0.250 mol dm−3 sulfuric acid for neutralisation. Calculate the percentage purity of the
ammonium chloride sample.

3. (a) The various changes that have been made to the definitions of oxidation and reduction
show how scientists often broaden similarities to general principles.
Combustion is also a redox type of reaction.

With reference to the combustion reaction of methane, explore two different definitions
