Visit Report

A visit to Astro Sdn Bhd, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur was organized by the class
“Satellite Communication and Navigation” on Tuesday, 11 June 2019. Total of 19 students
which leaded by Ts. Gs. Dr. Karthigesu A/L Nagarajoo visited to Astro Sdn Bhd to interact
with the broadcast industry to understand broadcast network systems and the latest
broadcast technology in Malaysia.

The visit started at 10 am and all the students were asked to get assembled in the
main entrance door of Astro Sdn Bhd to get the entry pass. Before get into the department
of Astro Sdn Bhd, two instructors from Astro Sdn Bhd gave a brief introduction to all of
the students. First, the students were introduced to the department of TV broadcast network
system. In this session, students got to know how the broadcast control room working. All
of the channels are monitoring in the broadcast control room and the staffs will check the
quality of TV broadcast network. Students also learned that all of the Live TV Broadcast
in Astro Sdn Bhd will delay for 5 minutes which means the live broadcast actually will
start 5 minutes early from the TV showtime schedule, this is to check whether the programs
are safety to broadcast to the whole Malaysia.

After this, students were introduced to the satellite dish in the outside area of Astro
Sdn Bhd. One satellite dish will in charge of uplink and other one will in charge of
downlink. If the satellite dishes are not working well due to the heavy raining, the broadcast
network will transfer to the satellite dishes at Cyberjaya. Finally, students were introduced
to the department of radio broadcast network system. In this session, students got to know
how the radio station looks like and the server room for storing all the music for radio
broadcast.

The whole visit was last for 1 hour which is from 10 am to 11 am. Overall it was a
good experience to know the working process of broadcast network system and the
communication between satellite and broadcast station.
