1. OVERVIEW OF GCT
1.1 HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
The Government College of Technology, Coimbatore formerly known as Arthur Hope College of
Technology, was started in July 1945 in accordance with the general policy of the then Government of
Madras to give high priority to technical education under the post-war
reconstruction schemes in order to meet the demand for trained engineers to complete industrial
and developmental projects in the State. The late Mr. G.D. Naidu, the well
known industrialist and Philanthropist of Coimbatore offered the premises, which had space for office,
workshops, and hostel, free of rent for a period of three years along with a donation of Rs.2, 00,000 and the
land for the present campus that facilitated the inception of the college in July 1945.The College was later
shifted to the present permanent site of about 45 hectares on the Thadagam Road in June 1950. The College
was then renamed Government College of Technology, which got its affiliation to the University of Madras
in 1951. Initially, Civil and Electrical Engineering branches were offered and in 1952, Mechanical
Engineering branch was introduced.
The main building of the College was formally opened by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice
President of India on 8th October 1959. The three-year B.E. Degree course for B.Sc., graduates
introduced in the year 1963 in Civil and Mechanical Engineering branches was subsequently abolished.
The Syllabi for Engineering Studies were revised and in 1968, the five - year Semester System was
introduced. In 1970, Electronics and Communication Engineering branch was started.
Post graduate degree courses in Structural Engineering (Civil) & Engineering Design
(Mechanical) were started during 1971. Post graduate Degree in Power Systems in the discipline of
Electrical and Electronics Engineering was introduced in the academic year 1977-78. With a view to
facilitating Diploma holders pursue their engineering education, part-time B.E. Degree courses were started
during the same year in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches. B.E. Production Engineering was
introduced during the same period.
Consequent upon the introduction of the 10+2 Scheme, admission to the Five Year B.E.
Degree courses ceased from the academic year 1984 - 85 and the Four year B.E. Degree courses were
started. A Post-graduate degree course in Applied Electronics (Digital Electronics) and a
Post-graduate degree course in Production Engineering were started during 1980 - 81. The M.E.
Degree Course in Public Health Engineering was started during 1981- 82. The M.Sc., Degree
Course in Applied Chemistry was started during 1982 - 83. The Instrumentation and Control
Engineering branch in the U.G. Programme was started during 1984 - 85. Whose nomenclature was
changed to Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering subsequently.
B.E. Degree course in Computer Technology and Informatics was started during the year
1986 - 87. Then the nomenclature was changed to Computer Science & Engineering.
A part time Post Graduate Degree in M.E. Computer Science was started in the academic year 1987 – 88.
4
A Full time Degree Course in Computer Science was started in the academic year 1990 - 91. B.E. degree
course in Information Technology was introduced in the academic year 2001 - 2002. All the UG and PG
courses were affiliated to Anna University in the academic year 2001 - 2002. Consequently, six new PG
courses were started in various disciplines. The Industrial Biotechnology Course which was started as a
self-supporting course, was then brought under the regular stream.
The college has got recognition from the Anna University for admitting research scholars to pursue
their Doctoral work in the disciplines such as Civil
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication
Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Applied Chemistry and Physics.
The College has completed 75 years of fruitful service and the National Board of
Accreditation Committee has accorded accreditation for most of the branches of study, namely
Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, and Electronics and Communication, Electronics and
Instrumentation, Information Technology and M.E Structures. Efforts are being taken to obtain
accreditation for all the courses offered.
Thus, from a humble beginning, the college has grown into a premier institution for
Engineering Education in this part of the Country.
Apart from consultancy work undertaken by engineering departments, academic research and
R&D activities are at a par with leading Institutions of the country. This institute offers Doctoral
Degrees in all Engineering departments in order to provide a platform for aspiring engineers to pursue
their research. Research papers have been published and presented by faculty members and research
scholars in referred journals, conferences, seminars and symposia of international and national repute.
Seminars, conferences and symposia are also organized by various departments of our institute. A
thriving environment for the faculty and students encourages collaborative research and consultancy
resulting in several MoUs with industry and other reputed academic and research institutions.
The faculty at Government College of Technology has technical expertise in various research
fields. The institute encourages its faculties to undertake testing and consultancy work through which
the faculties contribute to the industrial growth, strengthen institute-industry interface and enrich their
professional experience. Anybody from Industry/ External Agency can contact the institute to resolve
problems in almost every discipline of engineering, technology and science. Consultancy in its broader
sense goes well with the institute as it fulfils the external requests of the industry/ agency with the help
of its faculties.
