This topic talks about secularization. Secularization refers to
historical process in which religion loses social and cultural
significance. As a result of secularization the role of religion in
modern societies becomes restricted. (Lechner, Secularization)
By reading the definition you can already conclude that in
today’s modern world even though religion is very crucial to others it
may be neglected specially to secularized societies because faith lacks
cultural authority, religious organizations have little social power,
and public life proceeds without reference on their supernatural.
There are so many debates about being a secular society in fact
the modern world is a concrete manifestation of secularization
because there is a rabid shift from medieval world where religiosity
among faithful have been declined and there is an occurrence of being
separate of church and state.
The field of politics can be an example because the church are
against the administration of our president. It may be because of his
wrong doings that opposes the good will of the church and his words
that might be degrading the church and the religion as well.
Globalization allows religions previously isolated from one
another to now have regular and avoidable contact. As a result,
globalization brings to the light the fact that since religions have
similar values, not one of them is “correct” and, therefore, can be
changed ( Peter, 1994).
Generally, religion is a “system of beliefs and practices more
specifically means to bind together again that which was once bound
but has since been torn apart or broken”. (Perry, 1998 & Dwight,
2001).
In other words, religions contributes to globalization by allowing
the people to have social contacts with peers and bringing them
altogether by having the heart of worshiping our God.
Defining religion is very a difficult task, not only in the field of the
sociology of religion but also in other disciplines dealing with this
phenomenon but let’s put it in our mind that our differences in
religions or belief will not be a hindrance to have a peaceful
relationship with everyone and we can now say that there is a unity
in diversity when there is a respect for everybody.
