PROCEDURE

A. Obtain IR Spectra

All spectra is obtained using the following parameters and all scans are saved.

Range : 4500 cm-1 to 450 cm-1

Number of Scans : 16

1. IR Background Spectrum : IR background spectrum is obtained without a

sample in the instrument.
2. Sample 1 : The sample is placed in the sample holder and the spectrum is
obtained.
3. Sample 2 : The sample is placed in the sample holder and the spectrum is
obtained.
4. Sample 3 : The sample is placed in the sample holder and the spectrum is
obtained.

DISCUSSION

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, also known as FTIR Analysis or FTIR

Spectroscopy, is an analytical technique used to identify organic, polymeric, and, in some
cases, inorganic materials. The FTIR test uses infrared light to scan samples and observe
chemical properties. It can identify compounds and the general type of material being analyzed
when there are unknowns. This technique is used to assess the purity of a sample and is highly
reliable for identifying base polymer composition, additives, and organic contaminants. During
testing, when infrared radiation is passed through a sample, some radiation is absorbed by the
sample and some passes through and is transmitted.

In this experiment, we had chosen three unknown samples which is Sample 5,6 and 7.
Three of this sample will be used to determine its functional group. This experiment is start off
with collecting the first sample data which is Sample 6. After finished analyzing Sample 6, the
sample is removed and continue with other two samples which are Sample 7 and 5.

From this experiment, we have managed to identify the functional group of the sample
used based on the peaks obtained from the FTIR Analysis. The impurities in the sample are
also identified from the result obtained. As we can see, in Sample 6, there are 5 types of
compound existed while in Sample 7, there are also 5 types of compound existed. For Sample
5, there are 5 types of compound existed.

In conclusion, functional groups are structural units within organic compounds defined
by specific atom and bond arrangements. Infrared is a powerful identification tool for
functional groups because of the similar absorption frequencies for those groups in different
molecules.
