GUIDELINES FOR COURSE PAPER 1 IN LITERARY THEORY

A. Create your own title with your name under it. By doing so, you signify that this paper
is originally yours (but you may borrow others’ ideas by citing your sources).
B. This paper is a critical essay. The introductory paragraph should enlighten the
reader/s that this paper aims to exemplify Russian formalism through “Slumdog
Millionaire,” differentiate fabula and sjuzet, and reveal the story through the artistic
presentation of the movie.
C. (With a subtopic) Some paragraphs should contain your research about Vladimir
Propp and Viktor Schklovsky’s (1921) theory about fabula and sjuzet.
D. (With a subtopic) Next paragraphs contain your brief description of “Slumdog
Millionaire” stating what the story is about and citing the way the story is presented. Use
the present tense.
E. (With a subtopic) From the artistic presentation of the movie, lay down the story
(fabula) by picking the details from the artistic presentation (sjuzet). The fabula should
start from the childhood days of the characters. However, use the present tense, with
occasional and reasonable shift in the tense. The number of paragraphs is under your
control.
D. (Conclusion) End your paper with a concluding statement (Please do not begin with
“I therefore conclude….”)
