Analysis of vortex ring structures for varying geometrical sources:

The Karman vortex street in an inviscid flow contains vortices of uniform vorticity is related to the
wake behind a bluff body. The study of how to reduce the vibrational effects of the vortex rings was
previously not done and this study is the first step in our many fold research to reduce the
vibrational effects. We are trying to analyse mathematically the reason of vibration in the vortex
rings when emitted from a square and rectangular vortex cannon. An experiment was conducted
using square and rectangular vortex cannon with smoke as the fluid and air as the fluid medium
which gave rise to a continuously deforming vortex ring. The vortex ring had a huge amount of
vibration associated with its movement while changing its shape from a square to a diamond to a
rectangle and then again to a square. The change in geometry of the vortex cannon to a rectangle
gave rise to a most frequently oscillating vortex ring. We made some comments regarding the
relevance of the stability properties of the rings solving the Navier Stokes Equation under the
condition of a Reynolds number regime of 90 to 5000, inviscid flow and irrotational flow. The
outcomes of this experiment may help in building aerodynamically better structures of tall buildings
and bridges.
