JOY WESTERN
Joy Western Precipitators REPLACEMENT PARTS
AND UPGRADE NEEDS?

BHA has developed innovative, cost-effective,

smart solutions for many of the problems that
plague Joy Western-designed electrostatic pre-
cipitators. In fact, BHA now supplies more
parts to Joy Western precipitator owners and
does more Joy Western maintenance and
inspections than the OEM does.

If you’re having problems with your Joy

Western ESP, more than likely BHA already has
solved similar problems for other Joy Western
owners. After all, BHA’s well-trained field staff
and technical advisors have been inside more
Joy Western precipitators than anyone else in the world. And BHA is available 24 hours a day, seven days a
week to answer your questions, offer advice, and ship parts in an emergency.

BHA – YOUR SOURCE FOR JOY WESTERN PRECIPITATORS SOLUTIONS

PROBLEM: POOR PERFORMANCE AS A RESULT OF RAPPING SYSTEM PROBLEMS.
Joy Western units typically have shaft-mounted rappers. To maintain maximum
collection efficiency, all components of the rapping system must be 100 percent
functional. Joy Western-designed rapping systems typically exhibit a number of
maintenance problems, including coil failures, bro-

the shafts in the roof penetrations. Because the roof
JOY WESTERN ESPS. penetrations are only slightly larger than the rapper
shafts, even minor misalignment or dust accumulation in the sleeve can result in
shaft binding and a loss of rapping effectiveness.

SOLUTION:
To correct rapper malfunctions, we recommend the installation of BHA’s IMPAK™ SHAFT MOUNTED
RAPPERS. Built to last, these rappers are made with a copper wound coil encapsulated in epoxy for
additional protection. The fiberglass coil form provides superior abrasion resistance and fiberglass will
not absorb moisture and swell like common phenolic coil forms.

The IMPAK™ rapper’s mounting base provides shock isolation, preventing rebound energy from
destroying the coil. The tapered mounting assures maximum energy transfer and positive centering of
the shaft, making installation easy.

To remedy roof penetration problems, we recommend BHA’s oversized guides and

boot seals. Available in Hypalon and high-temperature Viton, these boot seals help
maintain proper alignment of the rapper shaft and form a positive seal to prevent
inleakage.
PROBLEM: POOR PERFORMANCE, COLLECTION EFFICIENCY, AND RELIABILITY RESULTING
FROM SLACK DISCHARGE ELECTRODES AND LOWER FRAME SWAYING.

Joy’s double-wire weight design uses one 25-35 lb. weight to tension two wires,
providing each wire with only half the accepted industry standard of 1 lb. of
weight per vertical foot of discharge electrode. This design seldom tensions both
wires evenly, and the weight often becomes bound

high spark levels, lower power input, and poor
ESP performance. An inadequate lower frame contributes to destabilization and an
increase in wire fatigue and failure.

SOLUTION:
BHA recommends the STABILIZED DISCHARGE ELECTRODE SYSTEM to provide proper tensioning and wire-to-plate align-
ment. This system is an integrated group of components engineered to work together to help eliminate destabilization.

Our design provides individual weights for each discharge electrode wire. Each single-wire weight is nearly as heavy as
the two-wire weight it replaces to ensure each wire is properly tensioned. Weights do not sit on the lower frame.
Instead, they hang freely in the lower frame guides to allow for thermal
expansion of individual discharge electrodes. The lower frame prevents
rapper-induced oscillations by stabilizing the weights, yet allows each
weight up to 3 in. (7.6 cm) of vertical clearance for wire expansion.

BHA’s solution includes a revolutionary

“V-TYPE” ANTI-SWAY SYSTEM designed to sta-
bilize the lower frame, controlling sway and
reducing wire movement. The Anti-Sway
System controls the movement of the electrode
relative to the collecting plates. This unique “V”-shaped stabilizer maintains proper clear-
ances by attaching the collector plates to the lower frames through an insulator system.

PROBLEM: COLLECTING PLATE CORROSION AND INSULATOR BREAKAGE DUE TO AMBIENT

AIR INLEAKAGE.

Joy Western ESPs typically have large roof openings. Ambient air freely flows
into these large openings, often causing corrosion damage to the roof and the
collecting plates mounted beneath the opening. Dust or ash from the process
can also blow up into the compartments and foul the insulators, requiring clean-
ing or replacement. Insulator tracking and breakage often result.

SOLUTION:
BHA’s TOP HAT SEALS create an airtight barrier around high voltage support
pipes and drastically reduce the amount of purge air required. These seals con-
sist of sturdy alumina or Teflon® insulators, mounting hardware, and an upper
cover plate designed with inducer nozzles. Top Hat Seals serve to drastically
reduce maintenance, repair, and operating costs.
PROBLEM: COLLECTING PLATES BECOME WARPED OR BOWED WITH
TIME, HEAT AND AGE. THIS REDUCES ELECTRICAL CLEARANCES, POWER
AND EFFICIENCY.

SOLUTION:
BHA’S PATENTED LADDER BAR SYSTEM is the only one of its kind
that can straighten even severely warped plates and help prevent
future distortion. Properly installed, this proven and cost-effective
system helps to permanently straighten bowed plates without
lengthy downtime or expensive plate replacement.

Unlike other plate straightening systems that often become disconnected after start-up, Ladder Bars are constructed
from separate modules which lock together to form a large unified assembly. Each Ladder
Bar fits between the ribs of two adjacent collecting plates to hold them straight and main-
tain electrical clearances, while allowing individual plates to remain mechanically isolated
for rapping.

Ladder Bars hang from the top of the plates,

holding the assembly snug against the col-
lecting plate ribs without clamps. The top
hooks ensure that the ladder bar assembly
cannot drift out into the gas stream or fall
into the hopper.

BHA has Ladder Bars for RUCC, M-Channel

and other Joy-style collecting plates.

PROBLEM: SPARKING AND POWER ARCS.

Many automatic voltage controls (AVCs) sense a spark in the same half cycle of occurrence and quench the spark at
some point after that. However, where a spark occurs is sometimes unpredictable because of rapping and the flow of
particulate-laden gas. Sparks not detected during the half cycle in which they occur and
quenched at the next zero crossing can cause damage, particularly to wires.

SOLUTION:
Install BHA’s PowerGuard SQ-300 Automatic Voltage Controls. The SQ-300 is a com-
pletely digital, easy-to-operate AVC designed and built by BHA in our ISO 9002-certi-
fied facility. It comes from the factory ready to install, without any need to calibrate the
input, and works with any T/R set.

The SQ-300’s high speed microprocessor allows it to halt firing

of the SCR during the same half cycle in which sparks occur.
This important feature greatly reduces the occurrence of damag-
ing power arcs by quenching them at the next zero crossing
point.

The SQ-300 quickly provides the information you need for efficient ESP operation. It displays the
instantaneous values of voltage and current digitally and in bar graph format. It also has on-line
help. This patented feature not only helps you operate the control, it offers suggestions on trou-
bleshooting the entire ESP – both the mechanical and electrical systems.
PROBLEM: POOR CONTROL PERFORMANCE AND CONTROL OBSOLESCENCE.
SOLUTION:
Upgrade your system using BHA’s advanced controls for superior control system perfor-
mance. Our WinDAC data acquisition system monitors all ESP functions from any remote
location – even BHA’s technical support centers. This allows BHA to help troubleshoot
problems and even upload corrections to your system,
