SPIRITUAL TOURISM
:The ‘Kongmu-Kham’ which means the ‘Golden Temple’ in Tai Khamti language, popularly known as the Golden
Pagoda built in the year 2010 with the vision and sole initiative of Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh,
Chowna Mein to promote tourism through Spiritual Tourism has become a major tourist destination in the Eastern
part of Arunachal Pradesh.
As per the official reports, there is annual turn over of more than one lakh tourists including both domestic and
international tourists, annually visits the Golden Pagoda with an average of seven thousand visitors in weekends
during the peak season. Most of the International Tourists which accounts for 40% of the total visitors are from
South East Asian Countries mostly from Thailand and Myanmar. They form 80% of International tourists which is
mainly due to cultural and religious similarities of the people of these countries with the Tai-Khamti of Namsai
District. Most of them are religious pilgrims which come either to participate in cultural or religious activities.
A Thai Research team from Mahidol University, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Thailand
has presently visited the Golden Pagoda at Tengapani (Noy-Cheynam) who are in Arunachal Pradesh to study the
tribal cultures of Arunachal Pradesh.
In his interaction with them, Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein highlighted the vast tourism potential of
Arunachal Pradesh. He said to the visiting tourists that “Ours is a dynamic State with numerous tribes and sub-tribes
having their own distinct identities, cultures and dialects living together for ages peacefully. Despite the challenges
faced with the advent of modernity, every community is jealously preserving their age-old cultural heritage yet
respecting each other’s culture, customs and traditions”. He said that the State of Arunachal Pradesh symbolizes a
unique example of ‘unity in diversity’ which according to him is ‘the beauty of our State’.
He welcomed the visitors from Thailand and other Southeast Asian Countries to visit, enjoy and explore the pristine
nature of our State and the vast cultural diversities.
He, while sharing his thoughts to the visitors said, “It is my ardent efforts to promote tourism with the spiritualism.”
True to his words, the annual turning over of tourists in the Golden Pagoda proved that the Spiritual Tourism can be
a way forward for boosting Tourism Industry in the State along with other tourism like Ecotourism, Adventure
Tourism, Cultural Tourism, etc. Similar tourists inflow can be seen in Lohit District during the Parashuram Kund
Mela, which is another example of Spiritual Tourism.
Those tourists, who often comes to Namsai as Religious pilgrims also visit Tezu and Roing, the district headquarters
of Lohit and Lower Dibang Valley District respectively and travel up to Mayudiah to see and enjoy the snow. The
day is not far that with the improvement of the road connectivity upto Anini, the district headquarter of Dibang
Valley District, visitors will travel to those places to enjoy the scenic beauty of our pristine nature.
Thus, apart from Cultural Tourism, Spiritual Tourism can be a major catalyst for promoting Tourism in Arunachal
Pradesh given the fact that the people of South East Asian Nations like Myanmar,Thailand, Cambodia, Laos,
Malaysia, Singapore and others shares cultural and religious similarities with the people of Arunachal Pradesh. It
can also be the fulcrum for realizing the vision under Act-East Policy.

How to reach naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh got its first railway station in 2013 - Naharlagun Railways station, which is hardly 10
kilometers from Itanagar. Once a week. Naharlagun New Delhi AC Express departs from Delhi and
reaches Naharlagun via Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh. On daily basis, Intercity Guwahati
train plies daily on this route. If the time of this train doesn't match your schedule then you can get a train
for North Lakhimpur (60 km), which is well connected with Guwahati.

Arunachal Pradesh has an excellent road network. There are two highways that connect the state with the
rest of the India. One is National Highway 52, which connects Jonai (sub-division of Dhemaji District in
the state of Assam) with Dirak. Another highway connects Tezpur in Assam with Tawang. Arunachal
Pradesh has its own bus transport service i.e. Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services (or APSTS) that
run state-owned buses to Itanagar from the various district headquarters like Tezpur, Guwahati in Assam;
Shillong in Meghalaya, and Dimapur in Nagaland. The State Transport Services fleet of buses consists of
day and night buses which are categorized as Deluxe and Non-Deluxe. Also, the roads that connects the
villages of Arunachal Pradesh are constructed in a pretty good condition because of the regular funding
provided by central government. Each, and every town in Arunachal Pradesh has its own bus station, and
daily bus services are available. Also, a highway is in the making process, which will connect Ledo in
Assam to Jairampur in Arunachal. Bomdila, Seppa, Tezpur, Itanagar, North Lakhimpur, Ziro, Daporijo,
Along, Pasighat, Roing, Tezu, Namsai, Miao, Changlang and Khonsa are the major bus depots of
Arunachal Pradesh.

Arunachal Pradesh doesn't have an airport, which is presently operational. Itanagar Airport is under
construction, and existing state-owned airports like Daporijo Airport, Ziro Airport, Along Airport, Tezu
Airport, and Pasighat Airport are small and are not in operation. If you're planning to reach Arunachal
Pradesh by airways then the closest option will be Lilabari Airport, which is 57 kilometers from the
Itanagar and provides flights Kolkata and Guwahati by an Air India Regional flight. You can also
consider taking a helicopter ride to reach the desired destination. Pawan Hans under the aegis of Govt. of
Arunachal Pradesh, operate daily passenger service with one Dauphin and Mi-172 helicopter.

Things to do
Arunachal Pradesh is a hidden gem of the North East India. Impeccably beautiful, lesser
explored, opulent in culture and history, the state bestows one with a number of attractions to see
and must have experiences. Arunachal is dotted with numerous monasteries like Tawang Gompa,
historical sites like Ita Fort, Dirang Dzong, Jaswantgarh and Bhismaknagar Fort which can give a
good glimpse of the rich history of the state. There are a number of lakes and waterfalls like
Nuranang Waterfalls, Bap Teng Kang Waterfalls, Glow Lake, Shonga-tser Lake and Pankang
Teng Tso that are ideal to visit for any nature lover. The Bumla Pass and the Sela Pass are also
some of the must see places in the state.

As far as must have experiences are considered, there is nothing like enjoying white water river
rafting in Lohit, Siang or in Subansiri Rivers. If the adrenaline rush is what you have been
seeking attempting climbs like Gorichen Peak is aptly suggested. Arunachal is also a place where
giving your tongue some challenges is mandatory. The state is replete with food options that are
completely unthinkable. Shopping is yet another important thing to do in the state, especially
buying the locally made handicraft items that include cane products, wood carving, jewellery and
handbags.
