Medical Billing Database Support

Health information is important for clinical management, treatment planning, and

intervention programs for both individual patients and at a population-level.
However, much of the information required for these secondary uses is locked away
in unstructured and semi- structured free text.

Historically, patient records were abstracted by manually scanning and reading

reports from information systems to identify key relevant information. An extensive
amount of clinical information may be required to be abstracted, and the
information is often trapped in the language in these reports. Furthermore, the
reports are in the form of unstructured, ungrammatical, and often fragmented free-
text. The effort required for information abstraction is extremely labor and time
intensive and is also subject to errors of omission.

The medical text analysis services developed at AEHRC aims to develop existing
natural language processing (NLP), information extraction, and clinical
terminologies and ontology use technologies further and incorporate domain
knowledge to bridge the gap between core techniques and the use of for medical
text inference and reasoning.

Through the use of large ontologism, in particular from an internationally

recognized health based clinical terminology, SNOMED CT, we can better
understand and associate complex medical terms found in medical reports. Novel
tools and algorithms have been developed to better analyze non-structured and
semi-structured free-text data.

More specifically, the techniques have been developed to:

• Standardize the free text by identifying medical concepts, abbreviations and
acronyms, shorthand terms, dimensions and relevant legacy codes

• Relate key medical concepts, terms and codes using contextual information and
report substructure, and

• Reason with the clinical concepts to infer complex clinical notions relevant to a
health application.
