Virtual Field Trip at Ford Motor Company

Implementation Plan

Since I am a CTE (career technical education) teacher, I have been talking about

different careers in automotive and where they originated. Detroit is where it all started, Henry

Ford was living in Detroit and wanted to build cars and the world was changed. Henry Ford was

known for the first affordable car but most importantly, he was better known for the assembly

line, which we still use to this day. Since we were on the subject of Ford, I had come across this

Virtual Field Trip of Ford Motor Company. I discovered this site through Discovery Education

which is loaded with resources that are relevant to my class. I decided that my students would be

really engaged in seeing the Ford Motor company so I broke down the lesson into 2 days since

there was a lot to see and we took a virtual field trip together.

Learning Experience

At the beginning of the lesson and video students were not too excited with the video

because it talked about the agriculture. They were expecting a video that was going to focus on

how vehicles were built. They thought they were going to see all the new cars, engines, and the

assembly lines. The video focused on how the Ford Motor Company uses STEM to solve the

practical challenges faced by the agriculture field. When customers talked about their day-to-day

while using their trucks, the video became relatable because the students could connect and then

they started to become engaged and really enjoyed the video. One of the activities “you be the

designer” allowed students to be the engineer and design and construct a product based on

consumer’s needs. Students really got into this activity because they could be as creative as

possible and there was no limits to the type of vehicle they could construct. Overall, the virtual

Field trip was a success with my students. They really enjoyed the different activities, and the

ability to experience the Ford Motor Company in Detroit with technology.

Mystery Hangout

Implementation Plan: I met a man through twitter who is also an auto shop teacher; he is out

in Alberta Canada. We have been collaborating about our curriculum, some projects and just

bouncing ideas back and forth with the future of automotive. We have talked about doing a

google hangout but first we would do a “Mystery Hangout” first. We ae looking into getting

our Advanced group to do it so next time we can do some Q & A on what we know and where

we are at. We are looking at our first hangout in January.

Learning Experience: When we began, the skype students were very excited and could not

believe what we were doing. Once the Inquirers began to ask the questions I could see, my

students get serious and focused. There was side conversations on where the other schools

location. This was exciting for me to see my students engaged and working together. Both

classes were very respectful to each other and both had a good time. We had an open conversion,

students were very interested in each other’s lives, and some exchanged information to keep in

touch. This was all so new to both classes that it took us the whole period figuring out our

locations. Students really enjoyed themselves that we schedules another Skype to ask out Auto

questions. This Skype session was different, students were very competitive and it got a little

loud in class. Overall, this was a great learning experience for both classes.

Project Amigo

Implementation Plan: This non-profit organization really touched my heart, we take so

much for granted when others are struggling just to get ahead in life. Many of my students

have relatives in Mexico and know financially how hard it is to go to school to better their

lives; I would like to use Project Amigo not only to show my students how lucky for a free

education but maybe to help. What we will be doing is we will contact Project Amigo and

write to students personally. My students will pick a student and write to him/her a letter.

These students will become pen pals and keep in touch through writing or social media.

Learning Experience: During this lesson, students took it very personal. Many of my

students have family in Mexico and in need so this GLP really made an impact on my

students. While writing these letters and sending them out student would talk about how

grateful, they are to live here and have a free education. We had an open discussion as soon

as we were done with the lesson, many students felt like we should do more. Students talked

about putting some money together and making a donation, I was inspired that students

want to make a difference and help. This inspired me to also make a donation. Through this

assignment it touch many of our hearts and made us think of how lucky we are.

Itzel Fernandez

Dear Tali,

I hope all is well, you remind me so much of my little cousin she is also in 6th grade. I
will be visiting her this summer but only for 1 week this year. She is out in Guerrero Mexico;
this is where all of my family is from. I usually go every summer but once I got into high school
I joined a lot of clubs and AP classes which take up most of my summers. I am going to summer
school this year so I can get ahead for next year. Next year I will be a senior and will be
graduating and hopefully going to a university. My dream will be to go to UC Berkley to become
a Psychologist. Where are you from? What are your thoughts, I know you are still young and
things will change but what are you into, like as a career? I like helping others that is why I want
to get into that field of work. If there is anything, I can help you with or if you need someone to
talk feel free to reach out to me. I will be here if you need me.

Sincerely,
Itzel Fernandez

Sergio Carmona

To Pancho:

Hi my name is Sergio Carmona I was born in West Covina California but my

family is from Michoacán Mexico. I am 17 years old and I go to Azusa High school. I will
be graduating soon, I plan on going to Mexico during the summer to visit my family. It is
so fun hanging out with my cousins, we stay up late and ride out atvs. We like to go
fishing and partying. Once I get back I will be going to community college, citrus college.
This is like high school all over again. Everyone from school comes here, I want to be a
mechanic and they have a good automotive program. Do you like cars? My all time
favorite is a Nissan Skyline R34, its so cool and super fast. One day I will get one. What
is your dream car? I see you are in 11th grade, what do you plan on doing as a career? I
know it is hard for you to go to school and I’m glad that there are places like project
amigo that can help you. I know you will do something great because you are continuing
to go to school. I hope everything works out for you. I wish the best for you Pancho,
don’t be a stranger and hit me up sometime.

Sincerely,
Sergio
