You are on page 1of 25

We are a diverse range of individuals, who,

despite our differences, are united in our vision

for a prosperous future. The longer our
ideologies are divided, the longer we must wait
for true and substantive change to have its
impact. It is up to our generation to stand for
what is right and work towards a better world.
We know the world is not what it used to be.
When faced with adversity, we are divided. We
act as individual states fighting against each
other with little regard for the common good.
74 years ago,  we  founded an institution to
ensure that we would never  fall  into global
anguish and despair ever again. Did we
succeed?

WELCOME!
Kia ora,

NZ Model UN 2019 is set to be a banger and we are excited to meet all

of you!

This event will be an experience like no other. This may be your fifth
time attending, or you may be a newbie! Irregardless, NZMUN is gonna
be a great time and a fantastic experience!

Over the past 10 months the committee has worked tirelessly to

provide an awesome conference. We've also compiled this resource,
which contains key contacts, some handy tips and tricks, and a few
food and activity recommendations to ensure you not only survive
those four days, but thrive and have the most amazing time!

Till then, happy reading - and we cannot wait for July!

Ngā mihi nui,

The NZMUN 2019 Organising Committee

2
EVENT THEME
The theme for New Zealand Model United Nations 2019 is
“UN+Divided”. In our world today, division can be seen in every
dimension of society. Our committee believes it is important to not
only examine how these divisions are created, but also to foster an
environment of cooperation and resilience in the face of divisive
conflict.

Using this theme, delegates will learn the value of negotiation,

peacekeeping, and unity in the face of conflict. We will be exploring
ways to understand and appreciate nuanced issues that lead to
division, and how to navigate these complex issues to create
resolutions that strike a balance for all parties involved. The topics that
we will explore range from the future of free trade, ethnic minority
integration, air pollution, and collective rights.

This theme will help delegates explore the fact that not all division is
inherently negative, and that all situations should be analysed critically
before making any sort of judgement either way.

MAKE THE MOST
OF NZMUN 2019
Even if this isn't your first NZMUN, the following tips may be helpful!

Firstly, prepare for committees and plenary sessions. Our Educations

Officers and Special Rapporteurs have created some really informative
documents that will guide you in finding relevant materials that you can
use in debates and discussion.

Secondly, be open to new ideas and meeting new people. There will be
an incredibly diverse range of individuals attending NZMUN, people
from all different regions and backgrounds. Make an effort to get to
know others. You never know, other attendees you meet might end up
being your friends for life!

Thirdly, listen to the pro tips from welfare. Eat well, sleep well, drink lots
of water and make sure to dress appropriately. It gets cold and windy
down in Wellington so be sure to bring something warm!

HELLO FROM WELFARE
Kia ora, my name is Sophie and I’m very
excited to be your Head of Welfare for
NZMUN 2019.
This is the second year in a row that I have
been able look forward to a (windy) week in
Welly with all of the amazing delegates and
conference assistants from all around
Aotearoa.

It is a privilege to be able to help you all feel and be your best at what is
undoubtedly UN Youth’s front-running event for the year! Of course it is
also one of the most tiring and stressful events and I’m here to make
sure that we all get through in one piece as a team.

One of the biggest things that I would like to instill at this years conference
is to be open-minded. All of us come from different walks of life and
backgrounds which means we all have different opinions and thoughts
running through our heads. Maybe you’re an experienced NZMUNer or
perhaps this is your first time. If someone says or does something
surprising or you hadn’t thought of before and maybe you don’t agree
with, it is important to think about where they are coming from. You don’t
have to agree, but it's always good to listen, because who knows, you may
realise or learn something you never knew before! This way we can all
make sure that every single person at NZMUN, experienced or new, feels
safe and like they can be the best version of themselves.

Whether you’re simply after a band-aid or need a quick deep and

meaningful convo, don’t hesitate to come find me or any of the Welfare
team at NZMUN. And just remember “Those who cannot change their
minds cannot change anything.”. Ngā mihi - Sophie

TIPS FROM WELFARE
It’s important that you take good care of yourself during the conference so
that you can make the most of this great experience! Here are a few tips to
help ensure you have the best experience possible:

Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water – there will be
places for you to refill your drink bottles at the conference, so make use
of them!

Get plenty of sleep –it may be tempting to go out and about exploring
Wellington and spending time with your friends, but make sure you get a
good night’s sleep so that you are well-rested and able to give it your all
during the committee sessions and workshops!

Make sure you eat well and regularly – food is fuel so make sure you’re
having breakfast in the morning, even if you may not usually, and eating
at the conference!

Make sure you're safe when you're out and about - don't walk around
Wellington alone! If you need to leave the conference for something
important, make sure to check in and check out with Welfare.

Be kind to each other!

Don’t be scared to take a bit of time out – you can come and see welfare
at any point in time, we are here to help and support you!

8
WHAT DO I WEAR?
The dress code for the event is business formal (suits, dresses, blazers,
dress shirts and pants, and formal footwear),  national dress or school
uniform. If you wish to wear heels, do take note that you might be walking
around a fair bit, and they may end up hurting you. So please don't wear
heels if they're going to be a health hazard! Wellington might be very cold
and wet so make sure to wear layers and bring something warm.

9
THE NZMUN GALA

The NZMUN Gala will be one of the highlights of the conference.

This year, it will be hosted at Te Wharewaka o Poneke on the
Wellington waterfront where the NZMUN Gala will take place on
day three. This is your chance to dress to impress. The Gala is on
Saturday night running from 7:30pm to 10:30pm so make sure
to plan ahead for transport to and from the venue. There will
also be a coat check there so please don't forget to layer up for
the journey!

SPARE TIME?
Whether you find yourself with two hours, or two days in Wellington to
yourself, there’s plenty you can do! We’ve listed some fun (and relatively
cheap!) activities for you to enjoy below.

TE PAPA, WATERFRONT - $$$

Okay you knew this was coming. Te Papa is a must-do for any incoming
weekend Wellingtonian, and with their new Toi Art exhibition
showcasing some of the greatest local art New Zealand has to offer, it’ll
give you hours of enjoyment. It’s absolutely free as always, and is best
accompanied by a walk along the waterfront to the City Gallery.

CITY GALLERY, CIVIC SQUARE - $$$
City Gallery is a perfect way to take in a little bite of culture if you’re
pressed for time. With a more select range than the expanse of Te
Papa, City Gallery offers a unique perspective with all of its collections.
Their current exhibit, This is New Zealand, on until just after the
conference, the gallery offers a nuanced look into common perceptions
of an ever changing national identity.

THE BOTANICAL GARDENS, UPLAND ROAD - $$$
The Botanical Gardens are a great little spot to really become one with
nature. Maybe. On a more serious note, it is the perfect place to relax,
hang out, and just chill for a little during your stay here. With it only
being a Cable Car trip away, it’s a fun and easy activity to do with
friends! Be sure to bundle up nice and warm before you head out
though, the gardens in winter will not be forgiving!

relatively cheap!) activities for you to enjoy below.

THE CABLE CAR, LAMBTON QUAY/UPLAND ROAD - $$$
If you haven’t been on the Cable Car in Wellington, were you really even
here? The Cable Car is a $4 magic carpet ride to a whole new world
(Kelburn). Even if you aren’t keen on the psychedelic tunnels, or the
greenery of the botanical gardens waiting for you at the top, it’s a
fantastic way to get up to the Kelburn Campus for the event! Just get off
at Salamanca.

TAKE A STROLL, WATERFRONT - $$$
Embrace the inner Wellington in you and take in the beautiful city by
foot.  Best way to experience all that Wellington has to offer, the city is
super flat and easy to get around, explore the waterfront, the Golden
Mile and see the hipsters and their dogs. Those of you who are the
more active might want to take a stroll up/ run up Mount Victoria to
soak in all the views.

COUNTER CULTURE, 211 VICTORIA STREET - $$$
Whether you’re a Jenga assassin, an expert in all things Catan, or just
like the simple pleasures of Connect 4, Counter Culture has you
covered. For just $5 per person, you get to play any game in the store,
and trust me, you will be spoilt for choice. Grab a bite to eat or a sweet
treat, and play some games with all the great new friends you’ve made
at the event!
