The Society of Cardiovascular Care Practitioners of the Philippines, Inc. 19 th Annual Convention
entitled: “Building Bridges Towards Understanding the Emerging Trends in Cardiovascular
Nursing was held at the Novotel Manila, Araneta Center, Cubao last March 20, 2019. The said
event was filled with updates and reviews about the medical and nursing practice as well as fun
discussions and giveaways.

It’s been an honor to be a delegate at the historic 19 th annual convention of the SCVNPPI and the
learning that I got will be here forever. Listening to the seasoned doctors and nurses and sharing
their experiences in cardiovascular care is an advantage on the current practice in cardiovascular
care in the Philippines.

The first speaker was Dr. Ericc L. Cinco, the board of director of PHA. He acknowledged the
importance of nurses in cardiovascular care especially Filipino nurses who are naturally caring
that is why we are sought abroad. Being a core member in upholding the CV care, nurses and
doctors have to be a strong partner to achieve optimal recovery of patients.

Dr. Chito Permejo, who is one of the critical care doctors in PHC, focused on extracorporeal
membrane oxygenation or ECMO. As part of the team, nurses are the first to touch the patient
from the OR and are part of planning for patient treatment on ECMO. The speech was more of a
lecture that defined and demonstrated how ECMO works and as part of the OR team, it is
essential to know how the ECMO operates.

Pain management was the focus of the speech of Dr. Denky Shojie Dela Rosa and it was
somehow not in the cardiovascular discipline but is as essential as the latter. Dr. Dela Rosa
focused on cancer patients and the proper approach in managing pain to achieve optimum level
of comfort. She correlated the quality of cardiovascular pain and compared it with the cancer
pain.

It was also emphasized that family should be included in the plan of care. Patent’s expectation
have evolved through the years and that family members is an important part of the evaluation of
patient care. The proper ways on how to improve the image of nurses are also reintroduced
during the program like using the SBAR as we already all know. When referring a patient to the
physician, always be ready to use the acronym SBAR (Situation, Background, Action and
Recommendation). In that way, we are elevating our practice to the next level and we preserve
some valuable time for our patients. Next thing is to “manage up” other nurses rather than letting
them down. It is important to help each other during the duty hours for a smooth duty.
The program went well and there were exciting events like the trivia questions. There were song
and dance numbers at lunch time to entertain the delegates during the meal time. All of the
sponsors participated in the event are recognized on stage.

It was truly an honor to be at the 19 th SCVNPPI convention. It was a great addition in my nursing
practice that I can use on a daily basis.
