Project Dimension The Bonga Southwest / Aparo (BSW/A) project is a green
field oil development located in the Gulf of Guinea,
approximately 130 km offshore in water depths ranging
from 1160 m to 1410 m. The field lies predominantly
within OML 118 (formerly OPL 212) operated by Shell
Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited
(SNEPCo), about 12 km southwest of the Bonga Main field,
and straddles Chevron operated OML 132 and OML 140
acreages. SNEPCo (55%) operates the OML 118 license on
behalf of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC) in partnership with Esso Exploration and
Production Nigeria Ltd (ESSO - 20%), Nigerian Agip
Exploration Ltd (NAE - 12.5%) and Total Exploration and
Production Nigeria Ltd (TEPNG - 12.5%). Texaco Nigeria
Outer Shelf Ltd. (Chevron) is operator in OML 132 while

STAR Ultra Deep Petroleum Ltd (Chevron) acts as operator
in OML 140 on behalf of Lukoil and Oil and Gas Nigeria.
The project objective is to develop 3.2 billion barrels
STOIIP from 7 major deepwater turbidite reservoirs.
The project is a 150 kbopd nominal capacity spread-
moored FPSO with 260 kbwpd water injection capacity,
180 MMscfd gas processing, 190kblpd gross liquid
capacity and a minimum storage volume of 1.8 MMbbls of
oil. The project targets the recovery of 594 MMstb in the
Phase-1 development from 23 wells (12 production and 11
water injection) and an additional UR of 202 MMstb from
20 wells in the Phase-2 development. Additional estimated
recovery from Phase 3 is 193 MMstb.
Produced gas (Ph1 440 bcf / Ph2 250 bcf) from the FPSO
will be evacuated to the EA Riser Platform A (EA-RPA) via
a dedicated 12” x 100 km Gas Export Pipeline (GEP) and
then to the existing Offshore Gas Gathering System
(OGGS) pipeline. Processed oil will be offloaded to export
tankers via a Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) buoy
connected to the FPSO via 3 nos x 16” flexible risers as
primary offloading system and tandem offloading as
secondary offloading system. The FPSO will have a
nominal 100 persons living quarters (expandable to 150)
and a helicopter deck.
The Phase-1 subsea development comprises 12 subsea
production trees and 11 water injection trees clustered
around 3nos x 6-slot production and 3nos x 4-slot water
injection manifolds. The manifolds are connected to the
FPSO by 10” x circa 26 km of subsea production flowlines
and steel catenary risers (SCRs) in two flow loops and one
14” x circa 12 km water injection flowline and SCR.
Services and control of the subsea and wells facilities is
provided by circa 32 km of static and dynamic umbilicals
and circa 4 km of composite gas-lift umbilicals.
The project Phase-2 development will be undertaken about
3-7 years following First Oil Date (FOD). This phase
comprises 10 production and 10 water injection trees, a
new 4-slot production manifold, 2nos x 4-slot water
injection manifolds and 2nos x multi-hub water injection
sleds. The existing water injection flowline will be
extended by circa 5 km along with a new 12” x circa 8 km
water injection flowline with new associated service

umbilicals.
The project will be executed in six (6) EPC contract
packages. It is currently at the tendering stage, with
Invitation to Tender (ITT) issued for all six EPC contract
packages.
Special Challenges 1. BSWA is a Flagship Mega-project with high visibility and
significant technical complexity.
2. Managing the establishment of a project leadership
team in Nigeria as the project progresses from FEED
through tendering, into execution. All tender
preparation and evaluation will be done in Nigeria and
this will pose some logistical challenges.
3. BSWA project will be executed in multiple locations
globally and simultaneously by different EPC
contractors. Therefore, project control processes will
need to be embedded within each contract team.
Coordinating and aligning practices and schedules to
meet project requirements is one challenge. Achieving a
high standard of HSE performance and Goal Zero
particularly among new inexperienced local contractors
will be another.
4. Support maximization of design and execution synergies
between the company’s projects as mandated by senior
management.
5. Working with and influencing a diverse multi-cultural
team
6. During Execution, BSWA is committed to achieving a
target Nigerian Content (NC) in the approved Nigerian
Content Plan aimed towards meeting host government,
the company and partner aspirations,
