Coconut tree

The city of Iriga is a 4th class city in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines. Iriga city is
rich with different agricultural products that are often used by the community for their daily income,
pili nuts, banana, and corn, cocoa and such. Irigueños have a green thumb, like planting trees and
rice, horticultural and dried goods. Due to the growth of the population in Iriga, many things are
need to be utilize and used for their own need. An indigenous materials that is usually used in Iriga,
is the coconut tree. This tree is versatile; it has many uses that are beneficial to the community of
Iriga city.

The coconut tree plays a vital role in today in order to sustain our daily needs, coconut tree
has many uses, the leaves of tree can used for broom making, the fruit for juice, coconut oil and
“copra”, while the trunk of tree can be used for furniture making and scaffolding.

The coconut trees are mostly found in the barangay of San Nicolas near Mount Iriga, and barangay
Sto. Domingo which has a lot of space to plant with. Most of the people in that community use
coconut tree for house making because of it is abundant and strong enough to build houses.
“Copra” is another important thing that the community uses to have an income. It is a process in
which they get the inside part of the coconut fruit and dried for few days or weeks.

Because of its versatility, the coconut tree can be use for handicrafts, then sold to gain profit.
It can be made into bags, fans , and other decorative arts.
