Steps to Take for Product Design to Manufacturing

Every business around the globe operates to earn the profit by selling their
products or services. The quality of product or service offered by them is directly
proportional to their success. Thus, companies undertake extensive research and
development work when they introduce any new offering in the market. Most
entrepreneurs engage in research and development for a new product that they
want to introduce to the market. However, product idea and product design are
the most important aspects of new product development.

Step 1 – Product Idea

This step comprises of basic drawing revolving your product idea. Therefore,
always ask yourself – what would be your product, for whom you are developing
a product, what would be the features of your product, and how to make it user-
friendly?

Step 2 – In-depth Research

Even though you might have a unique product idea but make a research about
whether your targeted market is ready for it or not. It is necessary to study the
existing market trends and requirements. Therefore, you need to conclude what
is currently ruling in the market and is there anything identical to your product
concept.

Step 3 – Product Design and Development

Make the use of information that you have collected from your survey/study.
Based on the collected information, start creating product designs. But wait, when
you are outlining the design of your product, you need to ask yourself the
following questions:

 What is the job of my product?

 Will the product be reliable?
 Will my product be able to survive the rough use?
 Can the product be manufactured at a cost-effective price?
 What will be the quality of my product?
 What raw material is best for development?

Step 4 – Research and Development of the Final Design

This is the final step to your product designing with dimensions and raw-material
selection; therefore, before you move on to prototyping stage or manufacturing
phase, make sure you have a complete sketch to work from.

Step 5 – CAD
With the help of 3D modelling software (CAD – Computer Aided Design), you
will develop a computerized 3D model of your absolute product design. These
3D models will often show up problematic areas where the theoretical stresses
and strains on the product to be developed will be exposed. If any problem
persists, it is a best phase of product development to handle the design errors and
go back to step 4.
Step 6 – Prototype Development
Once you get the green signal from the previous step, it is the time to create a
fully functional prototype of your product design using computer aided
engineering systems. A physical model of your design is the best option for
testing product features.

Step 7 – Prototype Testing and Feedback

Test your product prototype with family, friends, and potential financiers. You
must be fair with your decisions while testing the prototype and listen to the
feedback you get back from other people. Check, whether every part is
functioning properly or not. If your prototype is not perfect, then move back to
3rd step and start on your product designs.

Step 8 – Product Manufacturing

Once you are satisfied with the performance of your product prototype, you can
proceed to the manufacturing stage. Product manufacturing expenses entirely
depend on the density of your product, especially, if there are numerous parts,
material selection, high batch product or low batch numbers. Being a smart
business owner, you need to consider these factors to make sure you manufacture
a healthy product for handsome profit.

Explanation of Rating
 Safety: This product is to be used in a normal envrionment but since there
is a chance of gases leaking from the gas cylinder which is present in this
environment the product should be design such that it doesn’t product any
sparks at any point during its operation hence its has a one highest
importance.
 Ease of Use: This is major factor that can lead a customer choose one
product over another based on the initial impression of how to operate the
product a product that easly be operated without any instructions manual
hence its has a one highest importance..
 Novelty of user interface: This refer to the dial of the dishwasher which
viusal shows the user the elapsed time. There is not always a huge margin
by which this can be improved on but ensuring that the dial is easy to read
is mandatory hence is the least important.
 Ease of Maintenance: This refers to the how easily the user can maintain
the condition the of product such as being able to replace this battery now
there and ease of repairablebity and this can influence the future choice of
the customer hence is the second most important factor.

Aesthetics:
The aesthetics of the product also have a major influence on a customer choosing
one product from an other as they might choose a product that is more visually
pleasing to view and hold in the hand and this is also heavily influences the
quality of the brand that produces the produect. Aesthetcis inviolves the shape,
form, color etc of the product.

Explanation of Rating
 Materials Used: The materials used in the maufacturing of the product has
the highest impact on the aesthetics as a product which is made of premium
component will be more appealing than on of less quality one even if the
design is much more attractive hence it’s the second highest importance.
 Team Motivation: The novel form of the DishWasher turned out to be an
important inspiration to the development team and a selling point for senior
management.
 Product Differentiation: This is the most important aspect of the product
as both the design and overall feel and look can make it stand out from the
competition can have a huge impact on how it competes with other
products.
 Pride of ownership, fashion or Image: This the least important aspect of
the DishWasher as it’s a household device and doesn’t have significant
effect on image or the pride that a customer can have from owning this
product hence it’s the least important aspect of the product

Design of a dishwasher and components

Project realisation
In this chapter the results from the different phases are presented. The sub-chapters are
divided into Pre-study, Creation of ideas, Solution and verification and Hardware and
solutions. This is according to the phases in the primary development step in the PMF

Collecting knowledge about dishwashers

To have an understanding for the product, knowledge collection was required. As a fist step,
reading was done on several fields related to dishwashers, for example the parts of the
machine, soils and how they are removed, detergents, the dish process, different programs,
peoples washing habits, how tests are performed and environment aspects.

Collecting knowledge about material

During earlier stages a material report had been done. The understanding from reading the
report was that there were two main suggestions on material (glass and plastics, with four
main suggestions). Despite the report there were still many uncertainties on which material
to be used. For example, more investigations needed to be done on several plastic materials.
To collect more knowledge, material specialists were also consulted.

Consumer needs
In order to get consumer insight, one of the things done during the pre-study was to read the
consumer interviews that had been done during the Consumer Opportunities and the
Concept Development phases. Interviews, with about 10 different people from three big cities
in Europe, were analysed.
Conclusions from reading interviews.
Opinions about the door that could be sorted out from the interviews were:
• Many respondents mentioned the importance of no leakage from the product.
• Many respondents also mentioned that they wanted a product that was robust and had
high quality.
• The product must be easy to clean
• The product must be silent when washing.
• Some respondents asked for the possibility to have different colours on the materials.
• Many respondents didn’t want to have the doors transparent because they did not want to
see the dirty dishes.
Brainstorming
During the thesis work the first brainstorming was done after a few weeks. There were five
participants and the session took one hour. The outcome was quite good. Many ideas were
quite general and not so defined but the discussion gave good outputs. The session was
divided into three parts
Part one
To begin with the problem was explained for the session participants. After that every person,
individually had to produce ideas on the problems explained and write or draw their ideas.
Part two
After part one every person presented their ideas and put them on a black board under
categories for every solution.
Part three
In the end of the session a discussion and evaluation was held. Different ideas were further
developed and others were combined.

Selection
The selection and evaluation was done through a discussion with a group of people. The
criteria that were used in the evaluation were taken from the conclusions from researches
and interviews done with the consumers. Also a concept scoring matrix was done based on
the same criteria that were used in the discussion.
The criteria that were used for selection and evaluation, and the scoring rate that was used
in the concept scoring matrix is presented below.
The criteria are a product of the knowledge from the consumer needs and decisions made at
Electrolux.
• No leak (35%) – How secure is the concept from leakages?
• Good accessibility (20%) – How good can the consumer access the product?
• Ergonomic (15%) – Is it easy to use?
• Intuitive and good design (15%) – How easy is it to understand how to use it?
• Easy to clean (15%) – How easy is it to clean the product?

Product
When evaluating the product, the product evaluation should be done according to the
specifications. The concept developed corresponds to the specifications such as: good
accessibility, integrated in the dishwasher and withstands chemicals used in a dishwasher.
The specifications such as: have water tight seal safe that prevents water leakages and
appropriate materials depend very much on the question of whether or not the selection of
material will withstand the requirements.
