THIRD QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT

GRAMMAR 10 -Mr. RONALD H. IBAJAN

NAME : ___________________________________________________ SCORE : __________

I. IDENTIFY YOURSELF
Directions: Comprehend each paragraph below; and encircle the topic sentence, underline the supporting details and encircle
box the clinching sentence if there is any. Then identify the Kind of Paragraph implied on each item.

1.Penicillin is one of the greatest of the wonder drugs. It has saved thousands of lives already, and will save many
more in the future. But penicillin has no affect whatever on the bulk of the ills of people and beasts. Good as it is,
penicillin is certainly not a cure at all. ____________________________
2. A hungry fox saw some grapes hanging from a high vine. He jumped and jumped to get them, but the grapes
were too high for him to reach. At last he gave up. The fox walked away saying, “I do not want those grapes. They
look sour anyway. ____________________________
3. On August 19, 1939- his 61st birthday, President Manuel Luis Quezon issued Executive order No. 217 prescribing
15 civic and ethical principles that should be taught in all schools to enforce the Constitution′s mandate to develop
moral character, personal, and civic conscience. The code was actually an elaboration of the Spanish slogan “God,
Country, and Family.” ____________________________
4. Keira sat by the window, her chin on her little hands, sadly watching the rain. It had rained all morning. The sky
was a dull leaden gray. Not a bit of blue showed through it. Softly she sang, “Rain, rain go away. Come again
another day,” then she prayed for the rain to stop. ____________________________
5. Chimpanzees seem to be natural show offs. Captive young chimps not only learn easily all kinds of theatrical
stunts, but they seem to delight in doing them in the applause they earn. Even in their natural surroundings, in
Africa, they are highly dramatic. When a group comes upon a good supply of fruit, young and old are likely to
stamp and pound on the roots of large trees and raise a chorus of wild hoots and screams. Observers have described
chimpanzees “carnivals” that went on for hours. ____________________________
6. I was the last contestant in the bubble gum contest at school, and I was determined to win. Constant practice had
limbered my jaw and improved my techniques. I chewed the sugary wad of gum confidently until it arrived at the
properly smooth texture. I inhaled deeply; then I blew. The bubble was the size of the marble the size of an egg, the
size of a baseball. When it finally burst, like a rubbery pink balloon, the class cheered. I was clearly the new bubble
gum champ. ____________________________
7. Billy was more fortunate than the fatherless and the motherless sparrow searching for food in the snow. He had a
father. He had a mother. He had a warm house. And he had a friend, his grandmother. She was very old and not
strong, but she loved Billy and took care of him. Billy′s father and mother were too busy to pay much attention to
him, but his grandmother was always there when he needed her. ____________________________
8. Oceans and lakes have much in common, but they are also quite different. Both are bodies of water, but oceans
are very large bodies of salt water, while lakes are much smaller bodies of fresh water. Lakes are usually
surrounded by land, while oceans are what surround continents. Both have plants and animals living in them. The
ocean is home to the largest animals on the planet, whereas lakes support much smaller forms of life. When it is
time for a vacation, both will make a great place to visit and enjoy. ____________________________
9. Last year was the first time I had ever been the new kid at school. For the first four days, I was completely alone.
I don’t think I even spoke to a single person. Finally, at lunch on the fifth day, Karen Watson walked past her usual
table and sat down right next to me. Even though I was new, I had already figured out who Karen Watson was. She
was popular. Pretty soon, all of Karen’s friends were sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends
with Karen, but after lunch that day, it seemed like all sorts of people were happy to be my friend. You cannot
convince me that Karen did not know what she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a great deal
about what it means to be a true leader. ____________________________
11. The fire caused by burning popcorn engulfed the room. Thick oily smoke filled the air, orange flames flared up
the walls and grey puffs of smoke congested his breathing. His eyes blistered into tears and as he reached for the
door, his hand was scorched. As he made his way into the hall, the slimy smoke oozed outside and quickly followed
to the exit. ____________________________
12. New Year′s resolutions are constantly being broken, but they are constantly being made. Man wants to think of
beginnings and endings. This is probably because time extends before and behind us with a frightening extension,
with darkness at both ends. Man parcels out time in little entities, the beginning and the end of the day, of the month
of the year, of the century. Man is forever celebrating the renewal of time because this concept gives him hope. He
feels that every end can be a beginning. The New Year will bring better financial conditions, better health, and
better opportunities. It is hope springing eternal in the human breast that makes us make and break New Year′s
resolutions. ____________________________
