I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

I wandered lonely as a cloud  ___________________________

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,  ___________________________
When all at once I saw a crowd,  ___________________________
A host, of golden daffodils;  ___________________________
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,  ___________________________
They stretched in never-ending line  ___________________________
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they  ___________________________
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,  ___________________________
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

JJ
In the first line Wordsworth uses personification and simile: 'I wandered lonely as a
cloud'. A cloud can obviously not wander or feel lonely - these are human attributes or
actions. The comparison effectively reflects the Romantic ideal of finding expression for
the human condition in nature and establishes the link between man and nature.
Furthermore, the line also expresses the idea of the poet or artist finding inspiration when
he/she is isolated from the rest of mankind and is at one with nature - another Romanticist
aspiration.

'Crowd' (line 3) and 'fluttering and dancing' (line 5) extend the personification. A large

number of the daffodils seem to be dancing, celebrating their freedom and being in nature
(natural).

The infinite beauty of the flowers and their link with what is natural is emphasized in the
second stanza through the simile: 'Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the
milky way'. 'Tossing their heads in sprightly dance' is once again, personification, again
emphasising the joy of nature.

Stanza three further extends the personification with the waves also dancing, but the
daffodils joyously outdances them. Wordsworth says that their company is 'jocund' - they
are full of joy and life. Themetaphor emphasizes the joy nature can bring, for the speaker
declares that he 'little thought what wealth the show to me had brought'. He was enriched
by the experience without even realising it at the time.

The value of the experience lies within the speaker's memory. So charmed was he by
witnessing these beautiful daffodils that 'my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the
daffodils', whenever he is in deep thought and recalls the experience.
Be as wise as serpents, as harmless as doves
Where let the edifice of life be pity, mercy and love.
Life is a bubble
Entangled with thorns and troubles
In life's forest we wander lonely as a cloud.
Where it takes the shape or form of a cloud.
Variety is the spice of life.
Sometimes we may experience the kind cruelty
of the surgeon's knife.

Fortune smiled upon me.

When the winds were whispering into me.
'Thousand saw I at a glance, '
The murmuring bees upon the flowers danced
There is a miniature of the tiger and the ape in his character.

So I asked him am I your keeper?

To err is human, to forgive divine,
'I pray thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within.'

One should respect grey hair.

Who look forward for your concern and care.
Is life worth living that depends on the liver?
She is the joy of her mother.
There is no one so poor as a wealthy miser.
But can he spend generously his earned treasure?

Oh I pity on the beggar in torn rags!

His empty tummy and bags.

I am a citizen of no mean city,

Being a child I have no liability.
O liberty, what crimes have been committed in thy name!
'Frailty, thy name is woman's fame!
The child is the father of the man.
The proper study of mankind is man.'
