D’Arcy Lyness, Teens Health from Nemours, Nemours Foundation, Last Reviewed August

2018, https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/body-image.html, Access 7/3/19

This article doesn’t mention an author but someone who reviewed it. The article doesn’t talk

about the affects of a negative body image but how to prevent it. If you accept your body and

find things to like it better, you will naturally start to treat it better. The purpose is to show how

to prevent having a negative body image. Although the article was posted on a site for teen

health, I believe that the author is trying to reach the issue at its source by reaching out to

anybody with self-esteem issues and not just teens. I know that this article is reliable because it

was posted on a site created by the Nemours Foundation, a pediatric health system. I will use this

to show that body image issues can be prevented.

This article states that a negative body image can cause many health issues. It also talks about

how to prevent this. It informs the reader that there is really nothing wrong about not being

perfect and that should not be a reason to become depressed. I know that this is a reliable source

because the information was found from the CDC’s website and that the site that it was posted

on is powered by the AAFP Foundation. I will use this article to prove that body image issues

can cause major health issues.

This slideshow is very informative and its creator, Heather Gallivan, made it to just be

informative about what body image is. Gallivan makes her message very clear with bullet points

rather than using paragraphs. This allows the reader to properly take in the information provided.

This slideshow is reliable because it was made from the research and resources of the Park

Nicollet Melrose Center. I will use this slideshow to give general information on body image.

This article connects social media to body image and self-esteem. The writer doesn’t really go

into depth about the positive effects of social media, probably because they are mostly common

knowledge, but she uses a study conducted by Ilyssa Salomon, a doctoral student, and

psychology professor Christia Spears Brown, both from the University of Kentucky, to explain

the negative effects that social media has on teenagers. I know this source is reliable because the

information was cited from the University of Kentucky. I will use this to help show that there are

many causes of low self-esteem and to inform that social media isn’t just a way to connect with

others.

In this article the Mayo Clinic staff talks about the causes, affects and how to help your daughter

with the idea of negative body image. Since I don’t have a daughter, I have read this from a

different perspective, as if I’m helping someone who has issues with the topic. The authors stress

the fact that girls have an immense pressure to be attractive and how that affects the girls in a

negative way. The writers’ purpose of all this is to help parents understand what their daughter

could be going through and how to help. This article was written and published around the same

time that most high schools in America start their school years. So, I believe that this was written

to help parents during the time that most teenagers would start to have these issues. The author of

this article is a group of doctors and certified people who work for a medical clinic. This clinic

has made tons of research over many topics that deal with both mental and physical health. This

is also how I know that this is a reliable source. I will use this article to explain how and why

having a bad body image can cause problems.

This site is mainly informative, it makes points on what a healthy body image is and what an

unhealthy body image is. It also talks about how to help promote a healthy body image and how

to recognize someone with an unhealthy body image. I find this site to be very reliable and

current as it is made by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and was last

reviewed about a month ago. I will use this website to help provide general information about

majority of the points that I will make.

Young Women’s Health, Center for Young Women’s Health, Updated 1/29/19,

https://youngwomenshealth.org/2012/05/30/self-esteem/, Access 7/3/19

This source was written to help young women maintain a healthy body image to help have a

positive self-esteem. The author writes about how to personally maintain your own self-esteem

and not how to help others. This source can be considered reliable because it has been proven

trustworthy by the HONcode. It is also very current as the last update was within a year ago.
