What Your Handwriting Says About Your Personality

Jan. 23 is National Handwriting Day - a great reason to put away your smartphone
and walk around the lost art of penmanship.

Graphology, the science of analyzing handwriting to discover personality traits,

has been around right from the days of Aristotle. Experts in this stream say that,
just from analyzing a person’s handwriting, they can find over 5,000 personality
traits. Oh! My Gosh, this is crazy! How does it work? Umm, let’s find out.

A handwriting sample is more often referred to as a 'brain print,' because it is like a

snapshot of the writer's current mindset, thought processes, and unique personality
traits.

What you write comes from the conscious mind. How do you write comes from the
subconscious mind. This shows that, handwriting is all about the brain and not
about the hand. Nerve impulses travel down the arm, then into the hand, directing
the fingers to maneuver the pen. When the ink hits the paper, it reveals the
complex inner workings inside the writer’s mind, body and spirit. A graphologist
can spot the imbalances in handwriting that reveal the imbalances in the mind,
body and spirit of the writer.

Imagine you are at your desk in the office, awaiting a telephone call. The call
comes when you are away and a note of it, is taken by a colleague of yours, to tell
you who has rung. As soon as you return, the first thing that you will notice is, who
wrote you the note before you even read it. By seeing the individual features of the
writing, you are already doing graphology. Yes! You are!

The beauty of graphology is that it doesn't matter how often you write, how ugly or
great your handwriting is, it will always have meaning to the eye of the
graphologist when it comes to your personality and character evaluation.

Have you ever thought about your handwriting, as to why it is the way it is?

Everybody remembers in primary school those few people who had a great
handwriting. All their figures were within the lines, the words were evenly spaced
out and the pressure on each letter was also even. People with great handwriting
can make even boring notes look like a work of an art. If you've ever looked down
at your notebooks full of scratches and wondered why you're writing is so sloppy,
you'll be astonished to know that your handwriting can reveal a lot about your
personality. Yes, those sloppy notes point towards something interesting about
you.

Although there are few steps to improve certain aspects of your handwriting,
everyone has their own different style of writing that is unchangeable. Still, by
closely looking at your writing, you can get some insight into yourself.

Read on for several handwriting habits that can reveal a lot about your personality,
inner turmoil’s, and strengths.

Here are the 21 elements of handwriting that say something about

you:
1. Letter Size:

While you write, is your lettering small? Is it average? Or large? Your answers can
reveal many different things about your personality.

Small lettered writing reveals individuals who are :

Introvert

Withdrawn

Shy

Less Spontaneous

Quiet

Meticulous

Detailed

Simple and Docile.

They enjoy home life and withdraw themselves towards meeting new people. They
are observant with a great capacity for concentration and critic, but wish to be
unnoticed. At work, they have a tendency for specialization.

Medium handwriting indicates individuals with:

Great emotional balance

Spontaneous

Sociable

Balanced in Intro and Extroversion

Well adjusted

Adaptable

They adjust to the environment and can develop in management positions as well
as in subordinate ones. They analyze situations before they act.

Large letters indicate:

Extrovert behavior

Need for attention

Great Communication

Physical Dynamism

Vitality

Sociability

Generosity

Optimist

Self Confident

They are expressive individuals who look forward to connecting with others and
are not characterized for being too reflexive.
Very large writing indicates:

Vanity

Pride

Excessive Self Esteem

These individuals over-value themselves. They are also the one with a great global
vision and have difficulties interiorizing experiences and concentrating on specific
details.

Now, it’s time to get aware of your behavior by checking your letter size!

2. Word Spacing:

The space between words is one of the important handwriting features since it can
tell you a lot about your personality and mood. In handwriting analysis, the spacing
between words shows how much distance you want to keep from the people
around you and the degree of self-restraint you use in social situations whereas
spacing between letters indicates the extent of self-expression.

Word spacing can be wide, narrow or normal. Differentiating between wide and
narrow spacing is easy, you just have to see if the space between two words can fit
for a letter like “k” or “w” using your handwriting dimensions. If space is too
narrow for another letter to fit in then the spacing is called as “narrow” and if the
space is too wide so that it allows more than a letter to fit in, then the spacing is
called as “wide”. It is as simple as that!

Wide Word Spacing:

A writing sample with wide spacing between the words shows that the person is
independent, cautious and reserved. The one who enjoys the freedom and doesn’t
want to be crowded with people around. These individuals usually have trust issues
and are unable to establish a steady relationship with people around them. They
mostly keep quiet and avoid getting into discussions and arguments.

Narrow Word Spacing:

A writing sample with close spacing between the words shows that the person
needs constant contact with people so that it can make him feel good and sociable.
He may also have feelings of insecurity and might be in need of reassurance else
he may find it hard to live alone.

Normal Word Spacing:

A writing sample with no large spacing between the words shows that the person is
balanced when it comes to social connections and that he lives in harmony with his
surroundings.

3. Slanting:

Handwriting slant is related to affection, initiative and the tendency to apply

intuition or logic.

From a business perspective, slant indicates persistence at work, concentration,

organization and decision.

Take a look at your notes or journal. Notice how the words and letters slant. This
will help you know about your sociability.

Does your writing slant up as the sentence graduates? If yes, then this indicates a
high level of ambition and points towards the sign of arrogance. A forward-aiming,
right slant indicates openness to new people and experiences. A slant to the left or
backwards means that you are rebellious.

The greater the slant, the greater the importance we grant to “others” in each one’s
life.

(Note: if left-handed people slant their words to the left, switch right and left
characteristics above)

4. Letter Shapes:

Different scripts come in different styles. Rounded letters indicate creative or

artistic skill, whereas sharp and pointed letters indicate aggressiveness and
intensity. Smooth and connected letters point towards a systematic and logical
thinker.
5. The flow of the words:

Notice how words are connected to each other. This gives insights into how a
person thinks. If all of your words are connected then that means you are a rational
and logical person. If some of your words are connected, then that speaks about
your creative nature. If just a a few of your words are connected then that means
you are not a practical oriented person.

6. Looping:

Do you have beautiful, loopy, curly handwriting? If so, then it indicates that you're
likely a sympathetic, emotional and intuitive person. You also focus on your
emotions.

Coming to loopy handwriting, do your I’s have big or tight loops? In many cases,
tight i-loops show a restricted personality whereas loopier I’s are more
spontaneous.

What about your lower-case e’s? Slightly-looped e’s reveal skepticism of others
whereas open e’s reflect flexibility.

It’s time to check your journal and analyze your loopy handwriting and know the
secrets behind it!

7. Dotted I’s:

How do you dot your I’s? The position of the dot over the “i” can reveal more
about you than you can ever imagine.

If the dot is:

Directly above the stem: Organized and detail-oriented person.
Slightly to the left: Procrastinator.
Close to the stem: Not sharing easily.
Above the stem: Over-precise.
The right of the stem: Act quickly or hastily.
If you do a dash – like a dot then that indicates your anxious nature whereas circle
dots indicate stubborn and fussy behavior. If you dot your I’s with a heart or a
perfect circle, it means that you like attention from people.

8. Open and Closed o’s:

What about the o’s? Those who write in a hurry and leave their o’s open are more
talkative and social. These individuals will certainly win fans instead of opponents.

On the other hand, those who close their o’s are more privative. They are introvert
in nature. They live in their own company and don’t like to share their feelings
with others. These people are energetic and powerful-minded and mostly love
talking.

9. Crossing the t’s:

Letter “t” is the letter of will, leadership qualities, and intelligence.

It is one of the most important letters of handwriting. It provides information on

the ability to carry out the set goals and persistence for the achievement of ideas.

But, attention…Crossing t’s can also reveal interesting things about you. Those
who cross high on their t’s are optimistic and high in self-esteem whereas, those
who cross lower may have lower self-expectations. Slight longer crosses indicate
determination and enthusiasm while shorter crosses indicate his/her laziness. Thick
line crosses indicate that the person wants to be in charge and thin line crosses
indicate that the person is timid and has a weak will.

10. Lowercase s’s:

If we observe the strokes of the letter “s” lowercase, in particular, we can

understand that those tricky s’s can also tell you many things about yourself which
you never can imagine. Those who round out their s’s are people pleasers who
want to avoid confrontations. Pointy or sharp lowercase s’s indicate ambition and
curiosity. Smaller s’s that are wide on the bottom indicates that the person is not
following his dream.

Therefore, it’s time to understand and analyze your s’s right now!
11. Pressure:

The amount of pressure we put on our pens can reveal great things about us. This
feature tells us about health and willpower. Do you press the pen hard against the
paper?

Heavy pressure:

It indicates that the writer has a great level of energy. Energy can be physical or
mental. It also indicates healthy, forceful. These individuals keep fighting till the
end until they get what they want. They like physical activities.

Light pressure:

Light pressure means, physically weak. Those with lighter pressure in their script
are more empathetic towards others. The writer possesses less energy as compared
to the writer writing with heavy pressure. These individuals prefer activities that
require less physical work and are little sensitive but, more flexible. They are
adaptable to changing situations.

12. Speed:

The speed of the strokes is related to the speed of mental processes,

comprehension, intuition, and logic of the individual.

How fast you write also plays an important role in revealing your personality trait.
Fast writers are unlikely to be time-wasters—they concentrate on efficiency and
are impatient. Whereas, slow writers are more likely to be disciplined and
deliberate. They are also better organized!

13. Line Slope:

Notice the lines of handwriting slope on the page. A slope is influenced by a

person's mood at the time he or she wrote the handwriting sample.

Rising slope indicates that the person is optimistic and energetic in nature.

Falling slope indicates that the person is always worried and is lacking in
confidence. Straight one means that the person is self-controlled and reliable.
14. Capital Letters:

This feature gives insights into how someone views him or herself.

Very large letters show that the person is arrogant and dishonest. The same size as
small letters shows that the person is humble and kind.

Let us now know about huge capital letters. If you write your name with a huge
capital letter, you might secretly wish you were famous or recognized. Examples
include people we see as bosses at work, CEOs, music celebrities, and movie stars.
The bigger the letters or signature, the more that person enjoys being noticed.

15. Small Letters:

Experts say that, if you have a tendency to write microscopically, it means that
you're able to concentrate on the smaller things in life. It could also mean that
you're detail-oriented and a highly introspective person. Pretty cool, Isn’t it?

16. Unclosed Letters:

Stare at these letters in your journal "e," "g," and "a." How do you write these
letters? Do you leave them slightly open at the top? If yes, then you definitely need
to know the hidden meaning behind it.

People who don't close off letters properly are careless about finishing a job well.
This indicates that they're lazy, happy go lucky individuals, or they may be facing
something like depression.

17. Closely Written Words:

Words that are written too closely together point to a rushed mental state. These
people are anxious. If this sounds familiar to you, then it may be a good idea to
check in with yourself and see how you're feeling.

18. Scattered Writing:

There are few people who write neatly and within the lines. But if you are the one
who scatters your writing all over the page, then knowing this might be a help for
you.

Scattered writing means that you're talkative and excitable.

19. Angular Or Pointy Lettering:

If your letters have sharp angles, it could be revealing some inner turmoil which
you sometimes may not be aware of. Angular formation of letters deal with mental
energy and sometimes with anger. Those people whose letters have sharp angles
may have anger management issues or may be rigid or inflexible. So, let’s
understand this fact deeply and take care of it.

20. Neat Or Centered Writing:

When taking notes, do you indent your writing with computer-like precision? If so,
it might mean you're a little too uptight. You mainly strive for perfect grades and
worry about everything that is around you. It also indicates that you are more likely
to get into peer pressure, as you think a lot about everything happening around
you. It’s time to get aware of all this and leave your worries far away.

21. Sloppy Handwriting:

Did you used to have OK handwriting, but now it's a complete and utter mess?
This can point to a developing mental illness, so be careful. Have you felt
depressed lately, or is it your physical body abilities no longer feel right? If so,
then it's time to talk to a therapist.

Sloppy handwriting can also reveal a tendency towards carelessness, impatience,

and absentmindedness.
