PROJECT STATUS REPORT FOR 6th Semester

Note: Please Specify NA if not applicable and AS if already submitted.

1. GROUP NO (If ANY): IT-20

2. DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM: Computer science and Engineering/B.Tech 3rd year

3. DATE OF PROJECT REPORT SUBMISSION: 23/04/2018

4. MENTOR NAME: Er. Manoj Wariya

5. STATUS OF THE PROJECT (changes done with respect to your previous reports):

We have proposed a Deep Learning and Machine Learning approach to solve the problem of
detecting Diabetic Retinopathy and classify its severity among 5 classes.

6. PROJECT TITLE:

Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy and Severity Classification

7. ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT

(Technicality and motivation behind this work should be elaborated)

Progression to vision impairment can be slowed or averted if DR is detected in early stage of the
disease. One can see large number of population suffering from it but still testing is done manually
by trained professionals in real life which is quite time taking and lengthy process and usually due
to miscommunication and delayed results eventually leads to delayed treatment and ignorance.
Hence project idea originated to provide an automated, suitable and sophisticated approach using
Neural Network (Deep Learning methods) so that DR can be detected at early levels easily and
damage to retina can be minimized.

8. OTHER SIMILAR IDEAS AVAILABLE ON INTERNET

(Please mention origin of sources like website addresses, ftp address etc):

https://www.kaggle.com has also hosted a worldwide competition to solve this problem using any
sophisticated Machine learning techniques

9. IMPORTANCE OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT IN THE CONTEXT OF CURRENT STATUS

AND ITS RELEVANCE TO COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
(Highlight what is the new area or gap which will be solved in the project in relating to what is
already known.)

Neural Network based implementation of classifying DR provides better performance in situations

where resources such as high computing GPU’s are available for processing the data. Automating
such detection helps in early identification of a disease to an individual so that it can allow for
quick treatment and early recovery.
10. WORK PLAN (Prepare a time chart to show Time Schedule of activities)

(i) METHODOLOGY:

1. Study and analysis of various research paper published nationally and internationally
along with reference to various blogs on internet.
2. Understanding the previous implementation in this field and realizing the challenges to be
faced while implementing this problem statement via deep learning methodology.
3. Learning about how Convolutional Neural Network and its related concepts work.
4. Data cleaning, pre-processing and augmentation followed by implementation of CNN
over the dataset.
5. Trained, validated and tested to obtain results.
6. Compared performance of our methodology based on available resources with global
benchmarks while acknowledging scope of improvement.

(ii) TIME SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES:

1. Study and analysis of various research paper published nationally and internationally
along with reference to various blogs on internet (2 weeks).
2. Learning about how Convolutional Neural Network and its related concepts work. (3
weeks)
3. Understanding the previous implementation in this field and realizing the challenges to be
faced while implementing this problem statement via deep learning methodology. (1-2
weeks)
4. Data cleaning, pre-processing and augmentation followed by implementation of CNN over
the dataset. (3 weeks)
5. Data Training and Validation (1 week)
6. Compared performance of our methodology based on available resources with global
benchmarks while acknowledging scope of improvement. (1 week)

(iii) OUTCOME EXPECTED FROM THE PROJECT AND ITS RELEVANCE TO

COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING.

A satisfying accuracy over the algorithm and efficient precision and recall over the dataset
strongly assures for early and correct detection of DR. Such automated methodologies
replacing the manual work of human helps in technological advancement of community
for a better and healthy force.
