FCE ESSAY PARAGRAPH LAYOUT

 Decide if the essay is a for and against or an opinion essay.

 Write 140 – 190 words.
 Do not use contractions.
 Try to balance your paragraphs in terms of number of words.
 Plan your essay in advance.
 Brainstorm ideas.
 Make an appropriate use of connectors.

- PARAGRAPH 1: Introduction. You should include:

1) Introduce the role of the topic in today’s society.
2) Introduce the problem raised in the topic.
3) State your personal opinion.
4) Mention the three ideas you are going to focus on in your essay.

- PARAGRAPH 2: Develop idea 1.

- PARAGRAPH 3: Develop ideas 2 and 3.

- PARAGRAPH 4: Conclusion. State your personal opinion about the

topic and give reasons for your view as well as a possible solution to
the topic if a problem has been raised.
