What is GIS all about?

 A geographic information system (or GIS) is a system designed to capture, store,
manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographical data.
 GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize our world in ways
that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and
charts.
 Most common examples of GIS are Google Maps, Bing Maps, OpenStreetMap, etc.
Purpose of GIS:
 According to a survey conducted by Schuurman (2004), The main use of GIS is for :
1. Spatial analysis
2. Predictive modelling
3. Cartography
4. Visualization
 GIS finds it way in different professions such in:
 Architecture and design: Land planning, value-added tabular information
 Transportation: Optimal route selection, noise modelling, future travel modelling
 Water resources: Watershed delineation and management, determining flow
direction, assessing water quality
Significance of GIS:
 Generally, the significance of the use of GIS in Transportation Engineering is the
effectiveness and efficiency of the work done.
Application of GIS:
 General application of GIS in a life cycle of a Infrastructure:
 Data collection
- Precise and accurate data
- GIS is equipped with all the tools needed for data gathering
 Planning
- Selection of site, environmental impact, study of ecosystem, managing
risk regarding use of natural resources, sustainability issues, managing
traffic congestion, routing of roads and pipelines
 Analysis
- Traffic management analysis, site feasibility analysis
 Construction
- Optimizing routes for dump and concrete trucks, efficient work hours
 Operation
- Modeling of site data, keep track of timely operations of activities
