MAJOR PROBLEM
They say that an ailment afflicting the bones is one of the
most piercing of pains. Aiding it requires severe
treatment, devotion of time and money, faith and hope.
In the Philippines, there is only one public hospital where
bone trauma and diseases are treated. Filipinos from all
walks of life who need ortho-medical attention go to the
Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC) along Banawe in
Quezon City and it is the only tertiary hospital in the
Philippines that caters mainly to patients with orthopedic,
musculoskeletal problems and neuromuscular
conditions. It is also the major referral center for spinal
injuries in the country.
MINOR PROBLEM
1. Archaic infrastructure & facilities requiring
essential upgradation.
2. The Department of Health (DOH) admitted that
no “major renovation or improvement has taken
place” in the POC since the construction of the
hospital’s main building along Banawe Avenue,
Quezon City in 1963 “primarily due to budgetary
constraints”.
3. At present, patients at the old POC stay an
average of 22 days in the hospital.

GOAL
The project aims to enhance the delivery of health
services by transforming the POC into the country's
primary center for bone and joints disease that is at
similarity with global standards. It predicts the
development of a new facility intended to be a super-
specialty tertiary orthopedic hospital on an 8,000-square
meter area within the National Kidney and Transplant
Institute (NKTI) Complex along East Avenue, Quezon
City.
The project will involve the construction and upgrade of
hospital buildings and facilities, purchase and supply of
modern hospital equipment, furniture and fixtures and
the installation of a comprehensive hospital IT system
that will link medical and administrative operations and
other stakeholders.

to 5 days only. Thus, four times more poor
patients can be served in the new hospital.
