CULTURE AS A COMPANION OF LANGUAGE
Abstract
Language is not simply an assortment of words but an entity that connects an individual to his family, identity,
music, culture, beliefs and wisdom. It is the carrier of history, tradition customs and folklore from one generation to another.
Without language, no culture can sustain its existence. Language and culture are intricately related and dependent on each
other. Language is formed by culture, while culture is influenced and impacted by language. Without language, culture cannot
be completely acquired nor can it be effectively expressed and transmitted. Culture has the ability to acquire new characteristics
and forms. But it also acts as a companion of the language. Speakers of a specific language always have specific culture and
traditions related to their group. And where ever they go, they carry their culture and traditions with them.

The novel selected here has shown that the culture is the companion of language. In the novel, Afghan culture
is represented by using words and phrases from Pushto language, as the main character Amir belongs to Pathan family, and
some events are also presented which show the Afghan culture, not only in Afghanistan but also in Afghan community in
Fremont, California, America.
Introduction
Every group of people speaking a particular language has their own culture and traditions. They carry out their
customs and consents according to their culture and religious beliefs. The culture and its traditions are always come along with
the language and culture is called as the companion of the language. Both the language and the culture travel strongly bonded
with each other, with the people who use that language. Every ethnic group and pure people of the group never leave their
culture and traditions behind. Where ever they go, they do their culture practices as same as they do before although with some
restriction, but never leave culture fully. The ethnic group is, therefore, identified by their language and culture where ever they
go.

The research project will therefore seek to explain and investigate the following:

1. Use of particular words and phrases that represent Afghan culture specifically Pushtun culture.
2. Events that represent the Afghan culture.
3. Culture as a companion of language.

Literature Review
Literature foreshadows human lives and their changes through the ages. Through the art of writing, literature
expresses culture, tradition of one’s country and their people. Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner portrays Afghanistan’s Taliban
rule and their native cultural collapse. Hosseini learns kite flying which was banned by the Taliban who found it a cruel act. Kite
flying was a traditional game in Afghanistan and Hosseini had grown up with the sport during his childhood days in
Afghanistan. As an Afghan-American writer he tries to bring out his hybridity through his writing. During the encounter of the
Taliban, people try to escape to Pakistan and the United States because the country is being destroyed by inhuman activity.
Hosseini brings out many different cultures and classes, such as Pashtun and Hazara, Sunni and Shiite. The fall of
Afghanistan’s monarchy and the rise of the Taliban regime are expertly visualized through his narration. This paper tries to

project the cultural collapse of Afghanistan and Afghans’ search for their hybridity .
