Biology Chemistry

Rationale: Science exploration and discovery has been a very big part of our society as a whole. The
existential crisis that we face as a species is “where do we come from?” which leads to the idea that
there might be more to our universe than what we understand or even conceptualise. Space
exploration and the process of understanding it, is shared across all disciplines because it is explored
through the complexities of science and math, had multiple significant historical events, and has been
expressed through countless literary pieces - go team.

Focus Standards

Science
PO 1. Describe the scientific theory of the origin of the solar system (solar nebular hypothesis).
PO 2. Describe the characteristics, location, and motions of the various kinds of objects in our solar
system, including the Sun, planets, satellites, comets, meteors, and asteroids.

History
HS.SP1.1 :Evaluate how events and developments were shaped by the unique circumstances of time
and place as well as broader contexts.
HS.SP1.3 : Evaluate the significance of past events as they relate to their own lives and the world
HS.SP4.1 : Analyze multiple and complex causes and effects of events in the past and present.

English
9-10.RI.2 Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the
text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an
objective summary of the text.
9-10.W.6 Use technology, including the internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to
interact and collaborate with others.
9-10.SL.5 Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify claims
and findings and emphasize salient points.

Chemistry
S5 CO 4.PO 3. Represent a chemical reaction by using a balanced equation.

S5 CO 4.PO 9. Predict the products of a chemical reaction using types of reactions (e.g., synthesis,
decomposition, replacement, combustion).

S5 CO 5.PO 1. Describe various ways in which matter and energy interact (e.g., photosynthesis,
phase change).

S6 CO 1 PO 1. Identify ways materials are cycled within the Earth system (i.e., carbon cycle, water
cycle, rock cycle).

S6 CO 1PO 6. Analyze methods of reclamation and conservation of water.

English
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.3 Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to
develop and relate elements of a story or drama.

Interdisciplinary Project that each content area is working toward

Biology: Students will analyse and explore the structure of the universe and the theories that surround
it. They will then take this information and then apply it to how organisms develop to speculate
whether or not life could exist on other planets and if the discovery is worth the cost..
History: Students will analyze the impact space exploration had on society. They will submit a
paper explaining why it was so impactful with evidence supporting their answers.
English: Students will consider the possibility of life on Mars and what it would be like. They will
do their own creative project on Mars that goes hand in hand with their short story.
Chemistry: Students will act as astronauts who have discovered a new world. They will present in
teams on what they discovered. Students will make up a planet detailing the atmospheric and
planetary compesiton. They will then need to describe examples of four chemical equations and how
they appear in their “alien world”.
English: Students will explore different genres that include space, at the end of the unit, students will
design their own planet, creating a travel pamphlet to entice people to visit.
