 The Use of Kahoot Quiz in Lectures as a Formative Assessment Tool

Teaching factual knowledge to medium and large
cohorts of students can be difficult. In many
professional qualifications, factual knowledge is
necessary before moving on to higher level knowledge
and skills. For physiotherapy students, it is considered
extremely important to learn human anatomy. Lectures
are traditionally used to convey the information on
anatomy to our students. However, it is very difficult to
assess the learning of the students in such lectures. As
an academic, the author of this research found that it
was difficult to assess students’ retention of such
factual information. Also, it was nearly impossible to
find out which concepts needed to be further revisited
to ensure that students learn all anatomical concepts
effectively.
One easy way to assess factual learning is through
multiple choice questions (MCQ) test. However,
assessing student regularly through paper based MCQ is
not practically feasible due to the time constraints in
lectures. Kahoot provided an alternative interactive tool
to easily deliver MCQ tests covering the content
delivered in the session.
The author trialled a quiz with a cohort of more than
eighty students and took some informal feedback from
students. Due to the generally positive feedback from
students, the author started regularly using Kahoot Quiz
in his lectures. This poster presents example of how
Kahoot quiz was used in Physiotherapy lectures and the
lessons learnt from the integration of this formative
assessment tool.

Integrating Kahoot Quiz
To integrate Kahoot quiz in to lectures, first the
author started with the learning outcomes of
the sessions. The author then identified the key
concepts covered within each lecture. The
author decided to use a maximum of twelve
MCQ per each hour of lecture. For each session,
the author developed MCQs relevant to the
content of the session. These questions were
tested by the author for errors and then trialled
by another member of staff.
At the beginning of each lecture the author
informed the students that their learning will be
assessed at the end of the session formatively
through a Kahoot quiz. The last fifteen minutes
of each hour of lecture was used for the Quiz.

The use of mobile devices have become ubiquitous .
(Boulos et al., 2006; Cochrane et al., 2013). Kahoot
takes advantage of this by helping turn students’
mobile devices into devices that can also help their
learning. The process of logging in is smooth. The
author found that typically it takes less than five
minutes to register around a hundred students.
However, the performance of the tool is highly
dependent on the speed of internet connection and a
stability of the students’ wifi connection.
The author’s observation is that the students find the
competitive element of the quiz very engaging. The
quiz also offers a way for the students to assess their
learning in a non-threatening environment. For
kahoot quiz to be effective, it is important that the
MCQs are formulated correctly. Using visual content
in the stem of an MCQ can be an effective way to
learn subjects areas such as anatomy.
Implications for Pedagogic Research
Following the integration of Kahoot quiz in to
author’s lectures, the author intends to investigate
the following in further details
1. Is there a correlation between students
performance in the formative Kahoot quiz and
their summative assessment?
2. What are the experience of students of using
Kahoot quiz as a tool for learning?
3. Can Kahoot quiz be effectively used for formative
assessment of offsite international students, as
with trans national education (TNE)?
Implications to Your Practice
• Kahoot offers an innovative method to engage
students with the content of a lecture by
formative assessment of students through
interactive MCQs
• To successfully integrate Kahoot quiz in to
lectures, the key is to invest time in creating good
quality MCQs
• The data from the quiz can provide additional
insight to a tutor about students’ learning
