Structures and portions thereof shall, as a minimum, be designed and constructed to resist the
effects of seismic ground motions.
In this design project, Method 2 was used in determining the seismic design load applied in the
structure. In this method, earthquake which in actual is a dynamic load is translated as a static load
but with magnified magnitude.
Finding the Importance Factor (I)
𝑊4 = ∑ 𝑊𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑓
By using the application, faultfinder from PHIVOLCS, which gives the distance from one location
to the nearest West Valley Fault, it was found out that the closest distance to known seismic source
from San Jose San Miguel, Bulacan is 25.4 km.
𝑁𝑎 = 1.0
𝑁𝑣 = 1.0
Identifying Soil Profile Type
Identifying the soil profile type as described in Table 208-2 requires soil profile investigation at
the actual site. For this project, we were told to use soil profile Type Sc (Very dense soil and Soft
Rock).
Determining the seismic coefficients 𝑪𝒂 and 𝑪𝒗
Solving for 𝐶𝑎 :
𝐶𝑎 = 0.44𝑁𝑎
𝐶𝑎 = 0.44(1.0)
𝐶𝑎 = 0.44
Solving for 𝐶𝑣 :
𝐶𝑣 = 0.64𝑁𝑣
𝐶𝑣 = 0.64(1.0)
𝐶𝑣 = 0.64
Computing for the value of T, elastic fundamental vibration of the structure in the
direction under consideration
3
𝑇 = 𝐶𝑡 (ℎ𝑛 )4
𝐶𝑡 = value dependent on the material of the structure
ℎ𝑛 = total height of the building above the ground
3
𝑇 = (0.0731)(15.307)4
𝑇 = 0.56570
In addition, for Seismic Zone 4, the total base shear shall also not be less than:
0.8𝑍𝑁𝑣 𝐼
𝑉𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 𝑊
𝑅
0.8(0.4)(1.0)(1.00)
𝑉𝑚𝑖𝑛 = (43497.59274)
3.5
𝑉𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 3976.922765 𝑘𝑁
where 𝑊𝑖 is the seismic design load for each floors and ℎ is the height of each floor with
reference to the ground
For second floor:
𝐶𝑣1
(14473.8376 )(3.2)
=
(14473.8376 )(3.2) + (14473.8376 )(6.4) + (14473.8376 )(9.6) + (76.0799438)(12.6)
𝐶𝑣1 = 0.16609
𝐶𝑣1 𝑉 = (0.16609)(13670.672)
𝐶𝑣1 𝑉 = 2270.561912 𝑘𝑁
The effective Shear caused by the Total Base Shear distributed at each floor shall be applied as a
concentrated load for each floors:
37.0271116
8 kN
308.59 kN
