Second Assignment: EG55F&G1-Part II

Effect of sling length on rigging arrangement (30 %)

It is decided to study lowering of heavy manifold into the seabed. The rigging
configuration is shown in figure 1. You can pick up the data W (weight of manifold
in water in tons), together with dimensions h, b, h1 and b1 from the data sheet in
front of your name in the assignment folder. The dynamic amplification factor can be
found from figure 2. H is the vertical distance of the hook to C.O.G of the load. The
added hydrodynamic weight is 60% of the load weight in water.

Part a)

Please fill up the columns of this table:

In part a by using the available knowledge in static equilibrium, write an extended

report up to 10 pages (see the hint) to show the procedure for finding the load in each
sling. The weight of slings and shackles compared to load is negligible. Type all of
the formulas needed for the calculations. Apart from FAD, it is not necessary to
perform any other dynamical calculations. The computer program is not compulsory,
but you can use it to minimise your effort for the assignment.
Hint for part a:

I. By writing 3 dimensional static equilibrium equations show that the rigging

arrangement in figure 1, (four point lifting) is statically indeterminate.
II. Assume that one side (either AB, BC,CD or DA) takes an unknown
percentage of the load , whereas the corresponding opposite side takes the
remaining percentage.
III. In the chosen side use 2 dimensional statically determinate analysis and
combine it with equations of part I to find the sling forces on that side.
IV. For the corresponding opposite side also use similar analysis and combine it
with equations of part I to find the sling forces in the opposite side.

Part b)

First from your results in part a, choose an appropriate H . Then look at part 2,
chapter 5 of the DNV document in the assignment folder. Explain “Minimum
Breaking Load” and “Safe Working Load” then from the catalogue in the assignment
folder select the slings and shackles and justify your selection by a detailed
calculation. For part b, you can write up to 5 pages.

Part c)

By considering Elasticity modulus of the steel E  200 Gpa and also assuming that
the hook is supported by two parallel strongest rope in the catalogue. Find the natural
period of rigging oscillations in the following sea depths.

Demonstrate how values of the natural periods in the above table cannot provide any
hazard in lifting operations. Explain if pendulum type oscillation of the load which is
different from elastic vibration (above table) can provide any hazard to the lifting
operation. If answer the is yes, what solutions we can suggest to remove the hazard?
For part c, you can write up to 5 pages.
