WVSU MEIL Principal Internship Standard Summary

STANDARD #_9 – Operations & Management
Standard 9 concerns the areas of operations and management. The standard states,

“Effective educational leaders manage school operations and resources to promote each student’s

academic success and well-being.” I have met this standard by participating in and completing

the activities discussed below.

Overview/Summary of Activities

 Standard Activity 9.38A – For this activity I analyzed the health and fire inspections and

building work orders. I reviewed the findings of these reports and made

recommendations for improvements based on these findings.

 Standard Activity 9.41A – For this activity, I examined the school’s budget and how

funds are spent in relation to increasing learning.

Key Learnings from the Experience

I feel that I learned a lot in the actual ‘management’ aspect of being an

administrator/leader. I also learned the importance of reporting things that require maintenance

and reporting them promptly and accurately. In terms of the health department inspection reports,

it is difficult to be fully in control of all aspects that impact a school (mold for instance).

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I definitely feel that I need more experience in relation to this standard. I do not feel

100% comfortable when it comes to budgeting and financial aspects. I would like more hands-on

experience with analyzing and adjusting budgets. I would also like to have more experience in
working with the Health Department and Fire Marshal to know more about the guidelines and

regulations that come with their departments.
