WVSU MEIL Principal Internship Standard Summary

STANDARD #_5 – Community of Core & Support for
Students
Standard 5 concerns the areas of community of care and support for students. The

standard states, “Effective educational leaders cultivate inclusive, caring, and supportive school

community that to promotes the academic success and well-being of each student.” I have met

this standard by participating in and completing the activities discussed below.

Overview/Summary of Activities

 Standard Activity 5.22B – This activity allowed me to look at the discipline policies in

KCS and EBMS in general. Discipline and problematic behavior are issues at EBMS, so I

was able to look at our policies and offer recommendations to be considered for

improvement.

 Standard Activity 5.23E – This activity allowed me to look into the policies that impact

LGBTQ+ students in Kanawha County. While there was not much that specifically

mentioned LGBTQ+ students, I was able to determine that EBMS does comply with this

policy.

Key Learnings from the Experience

While completing these activities, I learned the importance of ensuring the safety and

well-being of ALL students. I also learned about the importance of proper discipline referral

practices. WVEIS allows for this to easily be done. I did find it interesting that in 2019 there are

not more policies specifically geared toward LGBTQ+ students.

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I would like to learn more about policies that impact differences in all students. It is

important to be fully aware of important policies concerning the well-being of students. I would

also like to learn more about discipline at various levels and have the opportunity to be more

involved with discipline in EBMS.
