Professional Dispositions Statement

The professional dispositions that I feel are crucial to being a great educator are higher

expectations, respect for the diversity of others, fairness, Professional conduct and reflection.

These dispositions are the building blocks for setting the foundation for my classroom and

promoting academic and behavioral success amongst my students.

The disposition of higher expectations to me means setting the bar for your students and treating

everyone as an equal because all students can learn with or without modifications. What I mean

by this is that we as educators will be presented with different students from different

backgrounds, different genders and students with or without exceptionalities these differences

shouldn’t change our expectation of the students which is why setting higher expectations is

good because it lets them know they can and will achieve it at their own pace and that they are

equal to their peer no matter their differences. Setting high expectations also allow them to build

their awareness of what is being taught while also activating their higher order of thinking to

keep pushing themselves and think outside of the box. This disposition correlates with principal II

of the Model Code Of Ethics for educators which is Responsibility for Professional Competence

(Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) - National Association of State Directors of

Teacher Education and Certification, 2022). Higher expectations relate to this model of ethics

because the professional educator acts in the best interest of all students. The educator knows
each child learns differently and at a different pace yet focuses on the key that all students can

learn so setting high expectations whether academically or in the classroom with rules and

routines the students know what is expected of them and that it is attainable. We as educators

promote higher expectations by increasing students' access to the tools they need to thrive such

as access to curriculum, activities and resources that ignite their brains and interest in order to

provide a quality and equitable educational experience.

Leading me into my next disposition of fairness. I treat all of my students the same regardless of

gender, race, or exceptionality. When teaching a child to learn none of those factors define them

or how I will instruct them so I will treat the students all the same and provide them with the

tools they need to succeed in school and in life. I also will ensure that students know how to treat

their peers with respect and the way they would want others to treat them. Implementing fairness

across the board will set the foundation and expectation in and outside of the classroom creating

and building the classroom management as a whole. Fairness disposition coincides with the

Third principal of the Model Code of Ethics of Education which is Responsibility to students.

This principle states the professional educator has a primary obligation to treat students with

dignity and respect (Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) - National Association of State

Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2022). Fairness ties into this because I ensure

that I am respecting students by taking into account their age, gender, culture, setting and social

economic context as I will also model for my students to ensure they are doing the same. Also by

interacting with transparency and in the appropriate setting as to not offend, embarrass or belittle

any one.
When it comes to Professional conduct I convey this disposition by ensuring that I am always

professional whether it be my professional attire or language so that my students see me conduct

myself in the proper manner and will follow my lead. If students see their teacher not following

the rules or appropriate dress code or code of conduct what message is that sending them. We

must always model what we expect from our students so they can knowingly see and apply it

themselves. This professional disposition links to both principle I and II which are Responsibility

to the Profession and Responsibility for professional Competence. I am responsible for knowing

and upholding the procedures, policies, laws and regulations relevant to my professional practice

regardless of personal views (Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) - National

Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2022).

The last disposition that I feel connects with my teaching is reflection. Reflections are both

helpful to both the teacher and the student because it allows the teacher to see what worked and

didn’t work when it comes to teaching the lesson. And for students it allows them to reflect on

what they have learned and how to build an awareness for this skill to be implemented going

forward. Reflection correlates with principles II and III, Responsibility for Professional

Competence and responsibility to students.I as a teacher am reflecting upon and assessing my

professional skills, content knowledge, and competency on an ongoing basis and communicating

with students in a clear, respectable, and culturally sensitive manner.

Steps I will take to improve on my dispositions such as Reflections will be to find a strength and

challenge in the delivery of my lesson to better help me differentiate instructions to satisfy all my

students needs. I also can adjust the way I give feedback to the students to provide “positive” yet
descriptive feedback to ensure they understand while still feeling confident enough to try again

rather than shut down.
