WVSU MEIL Principal Internship Standard Summary

STANDARD #_4 – Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment
Standard 4 concerns the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The standard

states, “Effective educational leaders develop and support intellectually rigorous and coherent

systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to promote each student’s academic success

and well-being.” I have met this standard by participating in and completing the activities

discussed below.

Overview/Summary of Activities

 Standard Activity 4.17A – This activity was about looking at the current master schedule

at EBMS and offering recommendations for improvement. As far as instructional time, I

feel that our schedule works wonderfully. However, I offered suggestions for more

structured time in the mornings between the times of students being dropped off and the

first class of the day, and also during grade-level advisory times.

 Standard Activity 4.19C – This activity allowed me to reach out the KCS Executive

Director of Technology (Leah Sparks) to gain insights on how technology is managed,

budgeted, purchased, and maintained. I also gave recommendations as to how to improve

technology sharing in KCS.

 Standard Activity 4.19D – For this activity, I spoke with teachers in my building,

including our technologist concerning what technologies we have and how they are used.

Key Learnings from the Experience

I learned a great deal when completing activities for this standard. I learned that veteran

teachers often would actually like to try to use the new technology they are presented with, but
do not fully understand it. I also learned that teachers often feel a great deal of pressure to be on

top of implementing the newest and the best technology in their classrooms, and that it

sometimes even gets in the way of valuable instruction.

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I feel that I need more experience in creating a school schedule and analyzing how school

time is spent at other grade levels. I feel a high school and an elementary school schedule would

be far more complex than a middle school, due to the many transitions required for multiple

teachers and the multitude of classes offered.

I would also be interested in learning more about budgeting and purchasing for

technology. I learned a lot from reaching out to Leah Sparks, but would like to learn more of the

specifics that go into it and who else has input on what the county needs or wants.
