CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ASSIGNMENT

A few weeks ago, on July 15th I had the opportunity to volunteer and to serve at
The Bishop Storehouse up in Kaysville from around 12 pm to 3:30pm. I called that
morning after trying different places where they were in no need of help. I am
glad I got lucky and got to talk to Bob, the organizer/who runs this place. He said
to me that they needed help and I was more than welcome to come at anytime.
When I walked in I didn’t know what to expect or what the place going to be like. I
was really shocked to see such a nice place that helps so many people in need. I
was really happy to be there. Bob and his secretary were really nice. They
explained to me what I was going to be doing. They showed me the place around.
And told me what they did as an organization. I was stocking all kind of foods, as
well as organizing all the shelves and assisting people with what they needed, if
they had any question or anything like that. In general I have to say that I really
enjoyed what I did and meeting new people.

I would say that volunteering connected somehow with the Theme I chose,
unfortunately I was not able to serve, volunteer where I was planning to which
was a women organization to help different women from different cultures and
backgrounds but It was hard for me to get “hired”there .I think the kind of
connection that I felt with this service was that now in the day there is an equal
opportunity for men and women, equal rights, etc. Stocking, loading cars,
organizing shelves might have been a man job before but now anybody can do it.
Now, women can do any type of job or even serve, fight for the Country,
participate in politics, in economy, etc.

In regards to my participation, I do feel that volunteering helped me realized that

I can be more involved in my community and serve others whenever I have a little
free time. Volunteering is satisfactory and connects you to other people. It makes
you feel happier and good about helping others in need. I would say that It does
promote freedom, because you feel that you are useful and you can help other
people. Back in the day there were Freedom Summer projects that were designed
to draw the nation’s attention to the violent oppression experienced by
Mississippi blacks who attempted to exercise their constitutional rights, and to
develop a grassroots freedom movement that could be sustained after students
activists left Mississippi.

I did enjoy this opportunity to serve and to help this organization. I think that this
class really gave me that little push I needed to get started on this volunteering. I
have thought about volunteering for a long time because of school as well as a
personal interest I have had. I would be more than happy if I could volunteer
again, I would definitely do it again because there are many benefits. I like the
idea of being connected to other people and make an impact in my community.
Another reason is that it is good for mind and body, it could be a good help for
stress/anxiety, makes you happy, increases self-confidence and brings fun and
fulfillment to life, volunteering can be very meaningful and interesting.
